Trailer Towing Maintenance
Your vehicle will require maintenance more often if you tow a trailer regularly.
Important items to pay special attention to include engine oil, transmission fluid, axle lubricant, and engine coolant. Brake condition is another important item to check frequently. If you tow a trailer, it is a good idea to inspect these items before starting a trip. Do not forget to also maintain your trailer and hitch. Follow the maintenance schedule supplied with your trailer and check it periodically. It is preferable to perform an inspection at the start of each day of driving. Most importantly, make sure all hitch nuts and bolts are tightened.
CAUTION
To avoid damage to the vehicle:
- Due to the higher load when towing a trailer, the engine may overheat on hot days or when driving uphill. If the coolant temperature gauge shows overheating, turn off the air conditioner and stop the vehicle in a safe place to let the engine cool down.
- When towing, check the automatic transmission fluid more often.
