Seat Belt with Pretensioner (Driver and Front Passenger Seats)

1: Retractor Pretensioner,
2: Emergency Tensioning Device (driver's seat only)
Your vehicle is equipped with driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners (Retractor Pretensioner and Emergency Tensioning Device System). The pretensioner ensures that the seat belt fits snugly against the body in certain frontal or side collisions. The emergency tensioning device may be activated in some collisions, together with the airbags, in the event of a severe frontal impact.
When the vehicle stops suddenly or if you attempt to lean forward too quickly, the seat belt retractor locks in place. In some frontal collisions, the pretensioner activates and tightens the seat belt against your body.
WARNING
To avoid serious injury or death:
- Always wear your seat belt and sit properly in your seat.
- Do not use the seat belt if it is loose or twisted.
- Do not place anything near the buckle.
- Always replace the pretensioner after activation or an accident.
- Pretensioner inspection, service, repair, or replacement must be performed only by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
- Do not strike the seat belt assemblies.
WARNING
Do not touch the seat belt pretensioner assemblies for several minutes after activation. When the seat belt pretensioner is activated during a collision, the pretensioner may become hot and may burn you.
WARNING
System service must be performed by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer. Body work in the front of the vehicle may damage the seat belt pretensioner system.

The seat belt pretensioner system consists mainly of the following components. Their locations are shown in the illustration above:
1 SRS airbag warning light 2 Seat belt retractor pretensioner 3 SRS control module 4 Emergency tensioning device
The sensor that activates the SRS control module is connected to the seat belt pretensioner. The SRS airbag warning light on the instrument cluster illuminates for approximately 3-6 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to ON, and then turns off.
If the pretensioner does not operate properly, the warning light stays on even though there is no SRS airbag malfunction. If the warning light does not come on when the engine is started, stays on, or comes on while driving, have the seat belt pretensioners and/or SRS control module inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.
Information
- The seat belt pretensioner system may activate in certain frontal or side collision or rollover situations.
- When the seat belt pretensioners are activated, a loud noise may be heard and fine dust, which may appear as smoke, may be visible in the passenger compartment.
- Although it is non-toxic, the fine dust may cause skin irritation and should not be inhaled for long periods. Wash all exposed skin thoroughly after an accident in which the seat belt pretensioners have been activated.
