Occupant Detection System (ODS) Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

For proper operation of the airbag system, the SRSCM detects the DTC for the occupant detection system. When the seat is occupied, the occupant sensor measures electrostatic capacitance and sends a signal to the SRSCM via CAN. The SRSCM recognizes the signal as 2 (two) different classifications: Class No. 1 (empty or child seat) and Class No. 2 (small or large occupant). Based on these signals, the ACU determines whether to deploy the PAB (passenger airbag) or not.
If the SRSCM is struck or rotated with the IG switch ON, the seat belt pretensioner, curtain airbag, or side airbag may be activated. Handle it with care.
