Child Restraint System (CRS)
Children Always in the Rear
WARNING - Restraint Location
Never install a rear-facing child or infant seat in the front passenger seat. A child riding in the front passenger seat can be forcibly struck by a deploying airbag and seriously injured.
CAUTION - Child Restraint Heat
A child restraint system can become very hot if left in a closed vehicle on a sunny day. Always check the seat cover, buckles, and latches before placing a child in the child restraint system.
Children under 13 years old should always ride in the rear seats and should always be properly restrained to minimize the risk of injury in an accident, sudden stop, or sharp maneuver. According to accident statistics, children are safer when properly secured in the rear seats than in the front. Even with airbags, children can be seriously injured or killed. Children who are too large for a child restraint should use the seat belts provided.
Most countries have child restraint laws that require children to travel in approved child restraint systems. Laws regarding age or height/weight limits under which seat belts may be used instead of child restraints vary by country, so you should know the specific requirements in your country and in the country you are traveling to.
Child restraint systems must be properly positioned and installed in the rear seat. You must use a commercially available child restraint system that meets the safety standards of your country.
Child restraint systems are generally designed to be secured in the vehicle seat with the lap belt portion of the lap/shoulder belt or the LATCH system on the rear seats.
Child Restraint System (CRS)
Infants and small children must be restrained in an appropriate rear-facing or forward-facing CRS that has first been properly secured to the rear seat. Read and follow the installation and use instructions provided by the child restraint manufacturer.
WARNING - Child Restraint Installation
An improperly secured child restraint may increase the risk of serious injury or death in an accident. Always observe the following precautions when using a child restraint system:
- Always follow the child restraint manufacturer's installation and use instructions.
- Always properly restrain the child in the child restraint.
- If the vehicle head restraint prevents proper installation of the child restraint (as described in the child restraint system manual), the head restraint of the corresponding seating position should be adjusted or completely removed.
- Do not use a car bed or child seat that hooks over the seatback. It may not provide adequate protection in a crash.
