General Troubleshooting Information

Before Troubleshooting
  1. Check the related fuses in the applicable fuse/relay box.
  2. Check the battery for damage, state of charge, cleanliness and secure connections. (Refer to Engine Electrical System - "Battery")
  3. Check the tension of the generator belt.
  4. Make sure the connectors are clean and there are no loose wire terminals.
  5. Make sure multi-cavity connectors are filled with grease (except waterproof connectors).
  6. All connectors have push-type locks (A).
  7. Some connectors have a clip on the side used to secure them to a bracket on the body or another component. This clip has a pull-type lock.
  8. Some mounted connectors cannot be disconnected unless you first release the lock and remove the connector from the mounting bracket (A).
  9. Never try to disconnect connectors by pulling on their wires. Pull on the connector halves instead.
  10. Always reinstall plastic covers.
  11. Before connecting connectors, make sure the terminals (A) are in place and not bent.
  12. Check that the lock (A) and rubber seals (B) are not loose.
  13. The rear of some connectors is filled with grease. Add grease if necessary. If the grease (A) is contaminated, replace it.
  14. Insert the connector fully and make sure it is securely locked.
  15. Route the wires so that the open end of the cover faces downward.
  16. Secure wires and wire harnesses to the frame with wire ties at the designated points.
  17. Carefully remove the clips; do not damage their locks (A).
  18. Insert pliers (A) under the base of the clip and through the opening at an angle, then squeeze the expansion tabs to release the clip.
  19. After installing harness clips, make sure the harness does not interfere with any moving parts.
  20. Keep wire harnesses away from exhaust pipes and other hot parts, sharp edges of brackets and holes, and exposed screws and bolts.
  21. Install grommets correctly into the grooves (A). Do not leave grommets twisted (B).
  22. Do not use wires or harnesses with damaged insulation. Replace them or repair them by wrapping the break with insulating tape.
  23. After installing parts, make sure wires are not pinched under them.
  24. When using electrical test equipment, follow the manufacturer's instructions and the instructions in this manual.
  25. If possible, insert the test probe from the wire side (except waterproof connectors).
  26. Use a removal tool with a tapered tip.
Refer to the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual II (Publication No. 0K000 003 A05).
  27. Verify the Customer Complaint: Operate all components in the problem circuit to verify the customer's complaint. Note the symptoms. Do not begin disassembly or testing until you have narrowed down the problem area.
  28. Circuit Analysis: Find the schematic of the problem circuit. Determine how the circuit should operate by tracing the current path from the power source through the circuit components to ground. If several circuits fail at the same time, the cause is likely a fuse or a ground. Based on the symptoms and your understanding of circuit operation, identify one or more possible causes of the problem.
  29. Isolate the Problem: Perform circuit tests to check the diagnosis made in step 2. Remember that a logical and simple procedure is the key to effective troubleshooting. Check the most likely cause of the failure first. Try to perform tests at points that are easily accessible.
  30. Repair the Problem: Once the specific problem has been identified, perform the repair. Be sure to use proper tools and safe procedures.
  31. Verify Circuit Operation: Operate all components in the repaired circuit in all modes to make sure you have corrected the entire problem. If the problem was a blown fuse, be sure to check all circuits on that fuse. Make sure no new problems appear and the original problem does not recur.
Connector Handling / Wire and Harness Handling / Testing and Repair / Five-Step Troubleshooting / Battery Reset

Description

When reconnecting the battery cable after disconnection, or after battery discharge or removal of the driver's side memory fuse, be sure to reset the systems listed in the table below. In addition, when replacing or reinstalling fuses after removal, they must be reset according to the table below. Refer to the table below when performing service.
System Reset
Power Window Whenever the window cannot be closed or opened properly, or whenever the battery has discharged or the related fuse has been replaced or reinstalled, reset the power window system using the procedure below.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  2. Press the power window switch until the window glass is fully lowered, then continuously press up for approximately 2 seconds.
Sunroof Whenever the battery is disconnected or discharged, or you use the emergency handle to operate the sunroof, you must reset the sunroof system as follows:
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, then fully close the sunroof.
  2. Release the sunroof control lever.
  3. Press and hold the CLOSE button for more than 10 seconds until the sunroof closes and moves slightly.
  4. Release the sunroof control lever.
  5. Press and hold the CLOSE button again for 3 seconds until the sunroof does the following:
    • Tilt down → Slide open → Slide close. Then release the lever.
  6. The sunroof system reset procedure is complete.
Trip Computer When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, the trip computer's stored settings are initialized. Therefore, inform the customer of this.
Clock When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, the clock is initialized. Therefore, the clock must be reset. (Refer to the Owner's Manual)
Audio When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, the customer's radio presets are reset (initialized). Therefore, you must record the customer's radio presets before service and set the customer's radio presets after service.
Heater and Air
Conditioner
When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, the heater and A/C system settings are initialized.
Therefore, the heater and A/C must be reset.
