Engine Exhaust Emissions (Carbon Monoxide)

~1min read

WARNING

Do not continue driving if you smell exhaust fumes inside the vehicle: Engine exhaust gases are dangerous. They contain carbon monoxide (CO), which is colorless, odorless and poisonous. If inhaled, it can cause loss of consciousness and death. If you smell exhaust fumes inside the vehicle, open all windows and contact a qualified service center immediately.

We recommend an authorized Mazda dealer.

Do not run the engine in an enclosed space: Running the engine in an enclosed space, such as a garage, is a safety hazard. Exhaust gases, which contain poisonous carbon monoxide, can easily enter the vehicle interior. If inhaled, they can cause loss of consciousness or even death.

Open the windows or adjust the ventilation system to supply fresh air when the engine is idling: Exhaust gases are a safety hazard. If the vehicle has been stopped for an extended period with the engine running and the windows closed, even in an open area, exhaust gases (containing carbon monoxide) can enter the cabin. If inhaled, they can cause loss of consciousness or even death.

Before starting the engine, clear snow from under and around the vehicle, especially from the area of the exhaust pipe: Running the engine in a vehicle stopped in deep snow is a safety hazard. An exhaust pipe blocked by snow can cause exhaust gases to enter the cabin. Because exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, they can cause loss of consciousness or even death of occupants.
