Engine oil
Notes on the oil level
Oil consumption varies depending on your driving style, but must not exceed 0.8 liter per 1,000 km. Oil consumption may be higher, however, if the vehicle is new or if the engine is frequently run at high engine speeds.
Depending on the engine type, the dipstick may be located in different places.
Before checking the oil level,
- park the vehicle on a level surface
- Stop the engine for approx. 5 minutes if it has reached its operating temperature.
- If the engine has not reached its operating temperature (e.g. if you have only started the engine briefly), wait approx. 30 minutes before taking the measurement.
Checking the engine oil level with the oil dipstick

Vehicles with gasoline engine (example)

Vehicles with diesel engine (example)
- Remove the oil dipstick 1.
- Wipe the oil dipstick 1 clean.
- Slowly reinsert the oil dipstick all the way into the guide tube, then remove it again.
The oil level is correct if it is between the MIN mark 3 and the MAX mark 2.
- If the oil level has dropped to the MIN mark 3 or below, add 0.5 to 1.0 liter of engine oil.
Topping up engine oil
WARNINGIf engine oil comes into contact with hot engine components, it may ignite and you could be burned. Therefore, avoid spilling engine oil onto hot engine components.
Environmental protectionTake care not to spill oil when topping up. You will pollute the environment if oil seeps into the ground or mixes with runoff water.
Use only engine oils and oil filters approved for vehicles equipped with a maintenance system. For a list of engine oils and oil filters tested and approved according to Mercedes-Benz specifications for operating fluids and lubricants, contact a Mercedes-Benz Service Center. The following actions will cause damage to the engine or exhaust system:
- Using engine oils and oil filters that are not expressly approved for vehicles equipped with a maintenance system.
- Changing engine oil and oil filter at intervals longer than those prescribed by the maintenance system.
- Using engine oil additives.

Engine oil filler cap (example)
- Turn the cap 1 counterclockwise, then remove it.
- Top up the engine oil.
If the oil level is at or below the MIN mark on the dipstick, add 0.5 to 1.0 liter of engine oil.
- Place the cap 1 on the filler opening and turn it clockwise.
Make sure the cap is properly secured.
- Check the oil level again using the oil dipstick.
