The technical data on capacities and operating fluids for the Mercedes E-Class (4th gen., W212, 2009–2016) is essential for maintenance. This section explains the recommended quantities and grades to ensure the vehicle's service life and to prevent damage.

Tampering with engine electronics

Note Have the engine electronics and related components, such as control units, sensors, actuators or connecting cables, serviced only at a qualified workshop. Otherwise, vehicle parts may wear out faster and the vehicle's operating permit may become void.

Installing two-way radios and mobile phones (RF transmitters)

WARNING

If RF transmitters are tampered with or not retrofitted correctly, their electromagnetic radiation can interfere with the vehicle electronics. This can impair the operating safety of the vehicle. There is a risk of accident!

Always have work on electrical and electronic equipment carried out at a qualified workshop.

WARNING

If RF transmitters are operated improperly in the vehicle, their electromagnetic radiation can interfere with the vehicle electronics, for example if
  • the RF transmitter is not connected to an external antenna
  • the external antenna is installed incorrectly or is not low-reflection.
This may compromise the operating safety of the vehicle. There is a risk of accidents!

Have the low-reflection external antenna installed by a qualified specialist workshop. When operating RF transmitters in the vehicle, always connect them to the low-reflection external antenna.

NOTE

If the installation and operating requirements for RF transmitters are not observed, the vehicle's operating permit may become void.

In particular, the following requirements must be met:
  • exclusive use of approved frequency bands
  • observing the maximum permissible output power in these frequency bands
  • exclusive use of approved antenna positions
Excessive electromagnetic radiation can cause health damage to you and others. Using an external antenna addresses the possible health risk from electromagnetic fields discussed in science.

Also observe the notes on operating mobile phones.

When RF transmitters are installed correctly, the following antenna positions are possible:Einbau von Funkgeräten und Mobiltelefonen (RF-Sender)

Sedan: approved antenna positions

Front roof area
Rear roof area
Rear fenders
Trunk lid
Einbau von Funkgeräten und Mobiltelefonen (RF-Sender)

Estate: approved antenna positions

Front roof area
Rear roof area
Rear fenders

Info

When installing the antenna in the front roof area on vehicles with a sliding roof, observe the movement range of the roof.

On vehicles with a panoramic sliding roof, installation of the antenna in the front and rear roof area is not permitted.

For the rear fenders, mounting the antenna facing the center of the road is recommended.

For retrofitting RF transmitters, apply the technical guideline ISO/TS 21609 (Road Vehicles - EMC guidelines for installation of aftermarket radio frequency transmitting equipment). Observe the legal regulations for add-on parts.

If your vehicle is equipped with a radio pre-installation, use the power supply and antenna connections provided in the pre-installation. Be sure to observe the manufacturer's supplementary instructions during installation.

Deviations from frequency bands, maximum transmit power or antenna positions must be approved by Mercedes-Benz.

The maximum transmission powers (PEAK) at the antenna base must not exceed the following values:
Frequency band Maximum transmit power
Shortwave

3 - 54 MHz

100 W
4 m band

74 - 88 MHz

30 W
2 m band

144 - 174 MHz

50 W
Trunked radio/TETRA

380 - 460 MHz

10 W
70 cm band

400 - 460 MHz

35 W
Mobile radio 2G/3G/4G 10 W
The following may be used in the vehicle without restrictions:
  • RF transmitters with a maximum transmit power of up to 100 mW
  • RF transmitters with transmit frequencies in the 380-410 MHz band and a maximum transmit power of up to 2 W (TETRA)
  • Mobile phones (2G/3G/4G)
For the following frequency bands, there is no restriction on antenna positions on the outside of the vehicle:
  • Trunked radio/TETRA
  • 70 cm band
  • Mobile radio (2G/3G/4G)

The Mercedes E-Class W212 (model years 2009–2016) impresses with precision and quality down to the smallest details. The care instructions for tires, wheels and accessories help preserve the value and safety of the vehicle over the years.

With this, Mercedes shows that the premium claim is consistently applied not only in technology but also in care and maintenance.

This keeps the E-Class a reliable and safe companion on every journey.
