Engine compartment. Other operating fluids

~3min read

Checking the other operating fluids in the Mercedes E-Class (4th gen, W212, 2009–2016) contributes significantly to operating safety. This section provides tips for safe handling of coolant and the windshield washer system and emphasizes the importance of the correct procedure to prevent injury or damage.

Checking the coolant level

WARNING

Certain components in the engine compartment can become very hot, e.g. the engine, radiator and parts of the exhaust system. Risk of injury when working in the engine compartment!

If possible, let the engine cool down and touch only the components described below.

WARNING

The engine coolant system is under pressure, especially when the engine is warm. If you open the cap, hot coolant can spray out and scald you. Risk of injury!

Let the engine cool down before opening the cap. Wear gloves and safety goggles when opening it. Open the cap slowly by half a turn to release the pressure.

Park the vehicle on level ground.

Check the coolant level only with the vehicle on level ground and the engine cold.

Turn the key in the ignition lock to position 2.

On vehicles with KEYLESS-GO, press the Start/Stop button twice.

Check the coolant temperature display in the instrument cluster.

  • The coolant temperature must be below 70 °C.

Turn the key in the ignition lock to position 0.

Turn the filler capturn slowly counterclockwise by half a turn and release the excess pressure.Turn the filler capcontinue turning counterclockwise and remove.
  • If the coolant is at the marking web when cold,in the filler opening, there is sufficient coolant in the coolant expansion tank. If the coolant is about 1.5 cm above the marking web when warm,in the filler opening, there is sufficient coolant in the coolant expansion tank. top up with coolant tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz if necessary.

Turn the filler capPlace it on and turn clockwise until it stops.
