Important safety notes. Selector lever (AMG vehicles)

The safety notes for the selector lever of the Mercedes E-Class (4th generation, W212, 2009–2016) emphasize the importance of correct operation of the automatic transmission, especially in AMG models. This section explains the functions of the gear positions and warns of hazards from improper use in order to prevent accidents and damage to the vehicle.

Important Safety Notes

WARNING

If the engine speed is above idle speed and you then engage transmission position D or R, the vehicle may accelerate suddenly. There is a risk of accident!

Always depress the brake pedal firmly when engaging transmission position D or R and do not press the accelerator at the same time.

WARNING

When the engine is switched off, the automatic transmission shifts to neutral position N. The vehicle can roll away. Risk of accident!

Always shift to park position P after switching off the engine. Secure the parked vehicle against rolling away with the parking brake.

Hybrid vehicles: Be sure to read the supplementary manual “HYBRID”, which is part of the vehicle literature. Otherwise you may not recognize hazards.

Note

If the gear position indicator in the multifunction display has failed, check carefully by pulling away slowly whether the desired gear position is engaged. It is best to select gear position D and automatic driving program C or S.

Additionally, indicators on the cover next to the selector lever show the current position of the selector lever.

The indicators light up as soon as the key is inserted into the ignition lock. The indicators go out as soon as the key is removed from the ignition lock.
