Refuelling. Important safety information. Refuelling procedure
The “Refuelling” section of the Mercedes E-Class (4th gen, W212, 2009–2016) contains important safety information and describes the refuelling procedure step by step. Information on the correct fuel grades and protection against misfuelling ensures safe and smooth refuelling.
Important Safety Notes
WARNINGFuels are highly flammable. Improper handling of fuel creates a risk of fire and explosion!
Avoid open flames, naked lights, smoking and sparks at all times. Before refuelling, switch off the engine and, if fitted, the auxiliary heater.WARNING
Fuels are toxic and harmful to health. There is a risk of injury!Avoid fuel contact with skin, eyes or clothing, and do not swallow fuel. Do not breathe in fuel vapours. Keep fuels away from children.
If you or other persons have come into contact with fuel, observe the following:- If fuel gets on your skin, wash it off immediately with soap and water.
- If fuel gets into your eyes, rinse them immediately and thoroughly with clean water. Seek medical attention without delay.
- If fuel has been swallowed, seek medical attention immediately. Do not induce vomiting.
- Change clothing that has become wet with fuel immediately.
Electrostatic charging can cause sparks and ignite fuel vapours. There is a risk of fire and explosion!
Always touch the vehicle body immediately before opening the fuel filler cap or handling the fuel nozzle. This discharges any static electricity that may be present.WARNING
Vehicles with diesel engine:If you mix diesel fuel with petrol, the flash point of the fuel mixture is lower than that of pure diesel fuel. With the engine running, exhaust system components can overheat unnoticed. There is a risk of fire!
Never refuel with petrol. Never mix petrol into diesel fuel.NOTE
Do not fill vehicles with gasoline engines with diesel. If you have accidentally fueled with the wrong fuel, do not switch on the ignition. Otherwise the fuel may enter the fuel system. Even small amounts of the wrong fuel can cause damage to the fuel system and engine. Contact a qualified workshop and have the fuel tank and fuel lines completely drained.
Do not fill vehicles with diesel engines with gasoline. If you have accidentally fueled with the wrong fuel, do not switch on the ignition. Otherwise the fuel may enter the fuel system. Even small amounts of the wrong fuel can cause damage to the fuel system and engine. Repair costs are high. Contact a qualified workshop and have the fuel tank and fuel lines completely drained.
If you overfill the fuel tank, you may damage the fuel system.
Make sure that you do not spill fuel on painted surfaces. Otherwise you may damage the paint.
When refueling from a canister, use a filter. Otherwise particles from the canister may clog the fuel lines and/or the injection system.
Do not get back into the vehicle while refueling. You could build up an electrostatic charge again.
If you overfill the fuel tank, fuel may spray out when you remove the fuel nozzle.Further information on fuel and fuel quality.
