Before Driving
Permissible Load on the Towing Hitch
The load must not be less than 25 kg.
The permissible load values for the towing hitch are listed on page 131. Keep to these values.
The load on the towing hitch increases the total vehicle mass. The maximum permissible payload is reduced by the mass of the towing hitch and the load acting on it. Observe this and do not exceed the maximum permissible gross vehicle weight when driving with a trailer.
Loading Luggage
Place cargo on the trailer as far forward as possible and, if possible, close to the axle.
A low center of gravity of the trailer increases the safety of the entire vehicle combination.
Do not exceed the permissible gross trailer weight or the permissible trailer load. Always use the lower value as a guide.
Tire Inflation Pressure
Tire pressure of the vehicle and trailer requires special attention. Tire pressure of the vehicle must correspond to the values specified for the maximally loaded vehicle. After correcting the tire pressure, reinitialize the Flat Tire Monitor. The trailer tire pressure is determined by the standards specified by its manufacturer.
Flat Tire Monitor
After hitching or unhitching the trailer, reinitialize the Flat Tire Monitor.
Exterior rear-view mirrors
Regulations require two outside rear-view mirrors that allow the driver to observe both rear corners of the trailer.
Such mirrors are available from a BMW service center.
Power Consumers
When towing a trailer, take the battery capacity into account and keep the operating time of power consumers to a minimum.
Always check the function of the trailer tail lights before starting a trip. Driving with non-functioning tail lights violates regulations and endangers other road users.◄
