Starting the engine by towing

Starting the engine by towing is not permitted for vehicles with automatic transmission.

Starting the engine from an external power source.◄

Engines of vehicles with a catalytic converter may be started by towing only when cold.

It is preferable to start the engine using an external power source.

1. Switch on the hazard warning lights (observe the regulations of the country of travel).

2. Turn the ignition key to position 2.

3. Engage 3rd gear. Vehicles with SMG: see below.

4. Start towing with the clutch pedal depressed. Then slowly release the pedal. Once the engine starts, immediately depress the clutch pedal.

5. Stop in a safe place, disconnect the tow bar or rope, switch off the hazard warning lights.

6. Have the vehicle checked at a BMW service center.

Vehicles with SMG transmission:

1. Begin towing with the selector lever in position N.

2. Select sequential mode.

The required gear will engage automatically and the transmission will connect to the engine.

When starting the engine by towing 525xi, 530xi, do not activate the Hill Descent Control (HDC) system.◄
