In an emergency

Towing the vehicle

~3min read

The towing eye, if supplied with the vehicle, is located in the tool container under the luggage compartment floor covering.

Fitting the towing eye

Manually release cap A fig. 125 on the front bumper or A fig. 126 (for versions/markets where provided) on the rear bumper by pressing it at the bottom, take the towing eye B from its seat in the tool holder and screw it fully onto the front or rear threaded pin.

Versions with Dualogic gearbox

Make sure the gearbox is in neutral (N) (checking that the vehicle moves when pushed) and proceed as for towing a normal vehicle with a manual gearbox. If it is not possible to put the gearbox in neutral, do not tow the vehicle, but contact the Fiat Service Network.

Panda Cross 4x4 and Panda 4x4 versions

The vehicle may only be towed in one of the following ways (always and only with the engine off, gearbox in neutral and handbrake released):

  • with all wheels on the road surface;
  • with the front (or rear) wheels raised or resting on the towing vehicle and the rear (or front) wheels resting on a dolly;
  • loaded onto the bed of the recovery vehicle with all wheels on the bed.

WARNING On Cross versions, when the hooks A fig. 127 are fitted, they can be used to tow the vehicle in an emergency.

WARNING 152) Before starting to tow, turn the ignition key to the ON position and then to STOP, without removing it.

Removing the key automatically engages the steering lock, making it impossible to steer the wheels.

153) Before screwing in the eye, thoroughly clean the threaded seat. Also make sure the eye is fully screwed into its seat before starting to tow.

154) While towing, remember that without the brake servo and electric power steering you must apply more force to the brake pedal to brake, and more force to the steering wheel to steer. Do not use flexible cables for towing, and avoid jerking. During towing, check that the tow coupling attachment to the vehicle does not damage the components it contacts. When towing the vehicle, you must comply with the specific road traffic regulations, both regarding the towing device and the behaviour to be adopted on the road. Do not start the engine while the vehicle is being towed.

155) The front and rear towing hooks (where fitted, depending on version/market) must be used only for emergency recovery on the road surface. Towing for short distances is permitted using a suitable device that complies with the Highway Code (rigid tow bar), or moving the vehicle on the road surface to prepare it for towing or for transport by tow truck. The hooks must NOT be used to recover the vehicle off the road surface or in the presence of obstacles, and/or for towing with ropes or other non-rigid devices. Subject to the above conditions, the two vehicles (tow vehicle and towed vehicle) must be kept as closely aligned as possible on the same centre line.

156) Do not use the towing hooks to secure the vehicle for shipping.
