Description and Operation - Starting System - Overview
Starting System
The starting system controls engine cranking. When the PCM receives signals from the ignition switch, the transmission range sensor (automatic transmission) or the clutch pedal position switch (manual transmission), the starter relay and BCM then supply power to the BJB starter relay. When the starter relay is energized, it supplies power to the starter motor, which cranks the engine.
Auto Start-Stop
The Auto-Start-Stop system helps reduce fuel consumption by automatically shutting off the engine when the vehicle is at a complete stop, and restarting the engine when the clutch pedal is depressed (manual transmission) or when the brake pedal is released (automatic transmission). The Auto-Start-Stop system is automatically enabled each time the ignition is turned on. The vehicle may restart automatically to maintain cabin comfort or to charge the battery.
