Refer to the Wiring Diagrams section for the schematic and connector information. See Wiring Diagrams, Cell 23, for schematics and connector information.

Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms

The wake-up control circuit wakes up the PCM before engine cranking. The PCM must wake up before the start request so it has time to complete its initialization. The wake-up control circuit is controlled by the BCM. The BCM activates the wake-up control circuit when the driver door opens, the BCM detects the passive key, or the engine start button is pressed.

Component Test(s)

Starter - Positive Circuit Test

  1. Make sure the battery is fully charged.
Refer to: Battery (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, Diagnosis and Testing).
  2. Perform the battery drain test. Refer to: Battery Drain Test (414-01, General Procedures).
  3. Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid "S" terminal and the battery positive terminal.
  4. Connect the positive multimeter lead to the battery positive post. Connect the negative lead to the starter solenoid "M" terminal.
  1. Place the gear selector lever in the Park or Neutral position.
  2. Activate the remote starter switch. Read and record the voltage. The voltage reading must be 0.5 volts or less.
  3. If the voltage reading is 0.5 V or less, perform the Starter - Ground Circuit Test in this section.
  4. A voltage reading above 0.5 volts indicates excessive resistance in the connections, the battery positive cable or the starter solenoid. Disconnect the cables from the solenoid "B", "C" and "M" terminals. Clean the cables and connections and reconnect the cables to their correct terminals. Repeat steps 3 through 6.
  5. If the voltage reading is still above 0.5 volts when checked at the "M" terminal, move the negative multimeter lead to the starter solenoid "B" terminal.
  6. With the gear selector lever in the Park or Neutral position, activate the remote starter switch. Read and record the voltage.
  7. If the voltage reading at the "B" terminal is below 0.5 volts, the concern is in the starter solenoid connections or solenoid contacts. Install a new starter. REFER TO: Starter Motor (303-06, Removal and Installation).
  8. If the voltage reading at the solenoid "B" terminal is more than 0.5 V after cleaning the cables and the solenoid connection, the fault is in the positive battery cable connection or the positive battery cable itself. Clean the positive battery cable connection. If this does not solve the problem, install a new positive battery cable. Refer to: Battery Cables - 1.5 L EcoBoost (132 kW/180 L hp) - I3/1.5 L EcoBoost (110 kW/150 L hp) - I3 (YZ), (414-01, Removal and Installation).

Starter - Ground Circuit Test

Slow cranking can be caused by high resistance in the ground or the starter circuit. This procedure tests the voltage drop in the ground circuit.

  1. Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid "S" terminal and the battery positive terminal.
  2. Connect the positive multimeter lead to the starter motor housing. The connection must be clean, free of rust or grease. Connect the negative lead to the negative battery terminal.
  3. Place the gear selector lever in the Park or Neutral position.
  4. Activate the remote starter switch and crank the engine. Read and record the voltage reading. The reading must be 0.5 volts or less.
  1. If the voltage reading is more than 0.5 V, clean the negative battery cable connections, the body ground connections and the starter ground connection. Retest.
  2. If the voltage reading is more than 0.5 V, install a new negative battery cable. Refer to: Battery Cables - 1.5 L EcoBoost (132 kW/180 L hp) - I3/1.5 L EcoBoost (110 kW/150 L hp) - I3 (YZ), (414-01, Removal and Installation).
  3. If the voltage reading is 0.5 V or less and the engine still cranks slowly, install a new starter. Refer to: Starter (303-06, Removal and Installation).
