NOTICE: Do not depress the brake pedal when installing or removing the brake pedal position sensor or damage to the brake pedal switches may occur.
- Inspect all brake pedal position switches and the brake pedal assembly to make sure the brake pedal is not inadvertently applied due to an incorrect brake pedal position switch or brake pedal installation. Resolve any concerns before proceeding to the next step.
- Remove the driver knee airbag.
Refer to: Driver Knee Airbag (501-20B Supplemental Restraint System, Removal and Installation). - Make sure all brake pedal and bracket assembly fasteners are correctly tightened.
- Install the driver knee airbag.
Refer to: Driver Knee Airbag (501-20B Supplemental Restraint System, Removal and Installation). - Using the Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) scan tool, select DataLogger->Chassis->Brake->Brake Switch Parameters.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Slowly depress the brake pedal to graph the BPS (brake pressure sensor) PID. The brake pedal application rate must not exceed 5 psi per second as displayed on the scan tool.
- Record the initial BPS PID value when BRAKE_LAMP and CRUISE_CANCL change from OFF to ON.
- If BRAKE_LAMP and CRUISE_CANCL change to ON before the BPS PID displays 44 psi or less, the brake pedal position sensor is installed correctly.
- If BRAKE_LAMP and CRUISE_CANCL change to ON after the BPS PID reads more than 44 psi, replace the brake light switch and cruise control deactivation switch (if equipped). Clear all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Repeat steps 3-6 to verify that BRAKE_LAMP and CRUISE_CANCL change to ON before the BPS PID reads 44 psi or less.
