Body and Paint

Effects of Improper Repair. Description and Operation

~2min read

Body repair usually requires a significant level of intervention in the existing body structure. Corrosion protection, sealers and NVH components are damaged and must be replaced.

To prevent a decline in vehicle quality due to poor repair quality, all repair work must be inspected during and after collision repair.

During the process, the entire repair sequence must be divided into logical sections, with inspection checkpoints created that require specific attention.

The following are some recommended inspection checkpoint sequences:

  • During and after body repairs.
  • Final assembly, accessory components, functional tests.
  • Vehicle delivery.

After completing body repairs, inspect the following areas:

  • Check operation of mechanical and electrical components.
  • The vehicle must be restored to the manufacturer's design specifications prior to the collision.
  • Check the fit of all body panels, welded and bolted joints.
  • Check the fit of attached components such as doors and hood.
  • Inspect the quality of welds.
  • Check sealers, plugs and NVH components.
  • Corrosion protection must be restored to pre-collision level.
  • Make sure the vehicle is in proper condition for painting.

After final assembly, a visual inspection and functional check are required.

  • Inspect the repair area for paint defects or body panel fit.
  • Check the installation of all trim components for gaps, rattles or poor fit.
  • Check operation of mechanical components such as door glass and seats.
  • Check the operation of electrical components, such as the roof panel, door locks and audio systems.
  • Check for air or water leaks in the repaired area.

To ensure quality repair, perform a pre-delivery inspection of the vehicle.

  • Check corrosion protection, sound insulation mats and rubber seals.
  • Check paint for overspray, runs, drips and sags.
  • Check vehicle cleanliness.
  • Perform a functional check of mechanical and electrical components.
  • Road test the vehicle.
  • Check for squeaks and rattles.
  • Make sure there is no wind noise or water leaks.
