- Obtain an automotive upholstery steam cleaner with the following specifications.
- Minimum capacity 1 liter
- 1300 – 1500 W
- Wide, T-shaped, high-strength plastic or metal (aluminum) steam cleaner head
- Remove the seat cushion or the seatback cover. Refer to the appropriate procedure in this section or one of the other sections 501-10.
- Set up the commercially available steam cleaner, following the instructions supplied with the equipment.
- Drain all water from the steam cleaner hose and head before placing the steam cleaner head on the seat heater mat.
- To soften the adhesive, place 1 adhesive strip in the foam area, place the steam cleaner head on one end of the seat heater mat and apply steam to this area for approximately 15 seconds before pulling on the seat heater mat.

NOTICE: Slowly remove the seat heater mat from the foam to avoid damaging the foam and to remove as much adhesive as possible.
Slowly pull the seat heater mat down along the length of the adhesive strip, allowing the steam cleaner head to follow and continue softening the adhesive until the seat heater mat separates from this section of foam.
- Position the steam cleaner head on the other side of the foam section. Apply steam to this area for approximately 15 seconds and slowly pull the seat heater mat down along the length of the adhesive strip, allowing the steam cleaner head to follow and continue softening the adhesive until the seat heater mat is detached.

- Remove the seat heater mat.
- Repeat steps 5 through 7 for each adhesive strip in each section of foam.
- Working from one end to the other, continue applying steam and separating the seat heater mat from the foam until the seat heater mat is completely removed.
- If necessary, pull the seat heater mat wiring harness out of the foam.

- Allow the foam to stand for 5 minutes to evaporate residual moisture.

- Install the new seat heater mat.
