Activation

  1. Refer to: Health and Safety Precautions (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
  2. If installing a new APIM, install the new APIM before performing the following procedure.
REFER TO: SYNC Module [APIM] (415-00 Information and Entertainment System - General Information - Vehicles With: SYNC 3, Removal and Installation).
    • When replacing the APIM, do not connect the new APIM to a Wi-Fi network until the scan tool APIM replacement programming is complete, as this may cause programming issues.
    • This programming procedure deletes all phones that have been paired with the SYNC® system.
    • To prevent timeout errors and minimize programming time, a wired Internet connection is strongly recommended during programming.
    • A USB flash drive with a minimum capacity of 32 gigabytes (GB) is required for this procedure (obtain locally).
      • Some software files are large, so additional time is required to download them.
      • It is important that the diagnostic scan tool has enough free hard drive space to store the downloaded software file.
      • If the message "Disk Space Error" is received, create additional free space on the hard drive.
    • A diagnostic scan tool is required.
      • Make sure the IDS version and software levels are up to date.
  3. Connect the battery charger to the vehicle and select the low charge setting. The negative charger lead must be connected to a clean chassis ground, not to the negative battery terminal.
  4. Connect the diagnostic scan tool to a power supply because of the duration of programming.
  5. Connect the diagnostic scanner to the VCM, and the VCM to the DLC.
  6. Close the IDS program.
  7. The ignition is on.
    • Using the diagnostic scan tool, open Internet Explorer and access the service publications website.
    • Start OASIS using "Read VIN and DTCs".
      • If the Read VIN and DTCs button is green with a red VCM icon, REFER to the SYNC - Software Programming document on the Service Tips tab.
      • If the Read VIN and DTCs button is red with a gray VCM icon, make sure pop-ups are enabled, monitor Internet Explorer pop-ups, then REFER to the SYNC - Software Programming document on the Service Tips tab.
    • If the "SYNC - Software Programming" document is not followed, programming may stop or encounter errors due to incorrectly configured Internet browser settings.
  8. On the OASIS tab, select the "SYNC" button. The last recorded status is displayed for the software.
    • Standard - used to update the APIM and any installed applications to the latest software levels.
    • Custom - used to display all available software options (including applications that may not have been previously installed) that can be programmed into the APIM. Use this selection when updates become available or as directed by a TSB or FSA.
    • Module Replacement - used when the APIM has been replaced. This type of programming performs the necessary initialization (software restore for newly installed hardware).
  9. Scroll down the screen, select 1 of 3 (Standard, Custom or Module Replacement) and select the "Read SYNC" button. The VIN, current APIM build, VIP and CIP software levels are compared with the last recorded state in the Ford online database, and the available software is displayed.
  10. Press the "Program SYNC" button to start the APIM programming process.
  11. Follow the diagnostic scan tool on-screen prompts.
  12. When prompted, connect the USB flash drive to the diagnostic scan tool.
  13. Make sure the USB flash drive is formatted correctly. To view available drives, press and hold the Windows key on the keyboard, then press the E key. Right-click the USB flash drive and select Properties. If the File System on the General tab is not exFAT, the drive must be formatted. To format the USB flash drive, right-click the USB flash drive, select Format, select exFAT as the file system, and select Default allocation size for the allocation unit size. Deselecting Quick Format is not required; it will result in a longer operation.
  14. Follow the on-screen instructions to download the software to the USB flash drive.
  15. When prompted by the diagnostic scanner, safely remove/eject the USB flash drive from the diagnostic scanner and connect it to a USB hub to install the software into the APIM. The update should start automatically and may take 10 minutes or more. An APIM reset at this step is normal.
  16. When the FDIM pop-up with the message "Installation complete" appears, select "Close", remove the USB flash drive from the USB hub and connect it to the diagnostic scanner, then select "OK" on the diagnostic scanner. This initiates the remaining automatic setup steps and reports the APIM build, VIP, calibration, CIP and application software levels to the Ford online database. Failure to complete this step results in an inaccurate database and missing, incorrectly installed or incorrectly configured applications (features), for example navigation (if equipped). An APIM reset at this step is normal.
  17. After programming is complete, the diagnostic scanner displays "Programming Successfully Completed."
