WARNINGS

  • This system does not replace the parking brake. Never leave your vehicle without applying the parking brake. If your vehicle is not parked securely, this may result in an accident or injury.
See Electric Parking Brake (page 162).
  • You must remain in the vehicle while the system is active. You are responsible at all times for controlling the vehicle, for controlling the system and for any intervention, where necessary. Failure to follow these instructions may result in loss of control of your vehicle and serious or fatal injury.
  • The system switches off if an apparent malfunction occurs, or if you run the engine excessively. Failure to follow these instructions may result in loss of control of your vehicle and serious or fatal injury.
  • This system makes it easier to start the vehicle on an incline without using the parking brake.

When the function is active, your vehicle stays stationary on the slope for two to three seconds after you release the brake pedal. This gives you time to move your foot from the brake to the accelerator pedal. The system releases the brakes automatically as soon as the engine has developed enough drive power to prevent the vehicle from rolling back down the slope. This function is useful when starting on an incline, such as from the ramp of a car park, at traffic lights or when reversing uphill to park.

Note: the system only works when you bring your vehicle to a complete stop. Place the gear lever in R (reverse) when facing a downhill slope, or in 1 (first gear) when facing an uphill slope. Note: The system has no indicator light to show whether it is active or not.

    Using hill start assist

    1. Press the brake pedal to bring your vehicle to a complete stop. Keep the brake pedal pressed.
    2. If the sensors detect that your vehicle is on a slope, the system is activated automatically.
    3. When you release the brake pedal, your vehicle stays on the slope without rolling for approximately two to three seconds. This holding time is automatically extended if you are starting off.
    4. Start off as usual. The system releases the brakes automatically.

Note: If you release the brake pedal and press it again while the system is active, the brake pedal travel may be noticeably reduced. This is normal.

Switching the system on and off

The system is activated automatically when you switch on the ignition.

You can switch the system on or off using the controls on the information display. See (page 89).

The system remains deactivated until you switch off the ignition.

Note: on vehicles fitted with a manual transmission, the system can be switched on or off. Note: on vehicles fitted with an automatic transmission, the system cannot be switched off.
