Data Recording

~2min read

Many electronic components in your vehicle contain data storage modules. These modules temporarily or permanently store technical data on the vehicle's condition, events or faults.

Generally, this technical data provides information about the environment or the condition of parts, modules or systems:

  • Operating conditions of system components (for example, fill levels)
  • Status messages of the vehicle and of its individual components (for example, wheel revolutions/rotational speed, deceleration, lateral acceleration).
  • Malfunctions and faults in components of certain important systems (for example, lighting or the braking system).
  • Vehicle reactions in particular driving situations (for example, airbag deployment or activation of the stability control system).
  • Environmental conditions (for example, temperature).

This data is stored for technical purposes only, to help identify and correct faults and to improve vehicle functions.

This data cannot be used to create travel profiles showing the journeys made.

When service work is performed (for example, repairs, service procedures, maintenance carried out under warranty or quality assurance), service personnel, including the manufacturer, can read this technical data from the event and fault data storage modules using specialized diagnostic tools. If required, you will receive further information. Once the fault is corrected, this data is either continuously overwritten or deleted from the fault memory.

While the vehicle is in use, in certain situations technical data relating to other information (accident reports, vehicle damage, statements made by a witness, etc.) may be linked to a specific person, possibly with the help of an expert.

Additional features may be subject to a contractual agreement with the customer (for example, vehicle location in an emergency). These additional features allow certain specific vehicle data to be transmitted from the vehicle.
