Electric parking brake

The vehicle has an Electric Parking Brake (EPB). The EPB can always be applied, even when the ignition is off. To avoid draining the battery, avoid repeated cycling of the EPB system when the engine is not running.
The system has
or PARK Electric Parking Brake and
Electric Parking Brake Service Light or Parking Brake Service Message. See Electric Parking Brake Light and Electric Parking Brake Service Light.
Before leaving the vehicle, check the
or PARK light to make sure the parking brake is applied.
Applying the EPB
To apply the EPB:
- Make sure the vehicle is at a complete stop.
- Press and release the EPB switch.
The or PARK light will flash, then stay on when the EPB is fully applied. If
The or PARK light keeps flashing, the EPB is only partially applied or there is a problem with the EPB. A Driver Information Center (DIC) message will display. Release the EPB and try to apply it again. If the light does not come on or continues to flash, service the vehicle. Do not drive the vehicle if
The or PARK light flashes. See your dealer. See Electric Parking Brake.
If the or Parking Brake Service Light or message appears, press and hold the EPB switch. Continue to hold the switch until
or PARK light stays on. If
the Electric Parking Brake Service light or message stays on, see your dealer.
If the EPB is applied while the vehicle is moving, the vehicle will decelerate until the switch is released. If the switch is held until the vehicle stops, the EPB will remain applied.
The vehicle may automatically apply the EPB in some situations when the vehicle is not moving. This is normal and is done to periodically check the EPB system for proper operation.
If the EPB does not apply, block the rear wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving.
Releasing the EPB
To release the EPB:
- Turn the ignition on or set to ACC/ACCESSORY.
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Press and release the EPB switch.
The EPB releases when
or PARK light turns off. If
the light or Parking Brake Service message appears, release the EPB by pressing and holding the EPB switch. Continue to hold the switch until
or PARK light turns off. If any indicator stays on after attempting to release, see your dealer.
Automatic EPB Release
The EPB will automatically release if the vehicle is running, in gear, and an attempt is made to drive away. Avoid rapid acceleration when the EPB is applied to preserve the life of the parking brake pads.
