It is unusual for a tire to fail while driving, especially if the tires are properly maintained. Refer to Tires. If air is leaking from a tire, it is much more likely that the leak is slow. However, if a tire ever fails suddenly, here are some tips on what to expect and what to do:

If a front tire fails, the flat tire creates drag that pulls the vehicle toward that side. Release the accelerator pedal and grip the steering wheel firmly. Steer to maintain your lane position, then brake gently to a stop, away from the road if possible.

A rear tire failure, especially on a curve, acts like a skid and may require the same correction used in a skid. Release the accelerator pedal and steer to keep the vehicle straight. The ride may be very bumpy and noisy. Brake gently to a stop, away from the road if possible.

If a tire goes flat, avoid further damage to the tire and wheel by driving slowly on a level surface, away from traffic if possible. Turn on the hazard warning flashers. See Hazard Warning Flashers.

  1. Firmly apply the parking brake.
  2. Place the automatic transmission in P (Park) or the manual transmission in 1 (first) or R (reverse).
  3. Turn off the engine and do not restart it while the vehicle is raised.
  4. Do not allow passengers to remain in the vehicle.
  5. Place wheel chocks, if available, on both sides of the tire diagonally opposite the changed tire.

This vehicle may come with a jack and spare tire or a tire sealant and compressor kit. To use the jack and spare tire equipment safely, follow the instructions below. Then see Changing a Flat Tire. To use the tire sealant and compressor kit, see Tire Sealant and Compressor Kit.

If the vehicle has a flat tire (2), use the following example as a guide to help you place the wheel chocks (1), if available.
