Removing the Flat Tire and Installing the Spare Tire
- Perform a safety check before proceeding. Refer to Flat Tire Safety for additional information.
- For vehicles with a wheel cover or center cap, pull the cover or center cap away from the wheel to remove it. Store the wheel cover in the cargo area until the flat tire has been repaired or replaced.

- Turn the lug wrench counterclockwise to loosen all of the wheel nuts, but do not remove them yet.

Rear shown, front is similar.
- Position the jack lift head in the notch nearest the flat tire.

Locate the notch on the sheet metal welded flange. Place the center of the jack lift head in the center of the sheet metal notch.
Do not use the jack in any other position.
- Attach the lug wrench to the jack by engaging both ends with each other.

- Raise the vehicle by turning the lug wrench clockwise. Raise the vehicle far enough off the ground so that there is enough clearance for the spare tire to clear the ground.

- Remove all of the wheel nuts.
- Remove the flat tire.

- Remove any rust or dirt from the wheel bolts, mounting surface and spare wheel.
- Place the compact spare tire on the wheel mounting surface.
- Install the wheel nuts. Tighten each nut by hand until the wheel is held against the hub.
- Lower the vehicle by turning the jack handle counterclockwise.

- Tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross sequence as shown.
- Lower the jack completely and remove the jack from under the vehicle.
- Tighten the wheel nuts firmly with the lug wrench.
When reinstalling the wheel cover or center cap on a full-size tire, snug all five plastic caps by hand, then tighten them with the lug wrench an additional quarter turn.
