Removal and Installation

  • Disassembling the thermostat may have adverse effects, reducing cooling efficiency. Do not remove the thermostat, even if the engine tends to overheat.
Thermostat
  1. Drain the engine coolant so that the level is below the thermostat. (Refer to Cooling System - "Coolant")
  2. Disconnect the quick-connector of the lower radiator hose (A).
    • After the hose is disconnected, remove the retainer clip (A), then disconnect the quick-connector.
  3. Remove the water inlet pipe and thermostat (A).

    Tightening torque: 18.6 ~ 24 N·m

  4. Install in the reverse order of removal.
    • Install the thermostat with the jiggle valve facing up.
    • When installing the thermostat, place the thermostat on the housing with the thermostat protrusion aligned with the groove in the housing, and install the water inlet. Be careful not to let the thermostat come out of the groove in the housing.
    • Clean the contact surface of the rubber seal.
  5. Fill the engine with engine coolant. (Refer to Cooling System - "Engine Coolant")
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  7. Recheck the coolant level.
  8. Remove the intake manifold. (Refer to Intake and Exhaust Systems — Intake Manifold)
  9. Disconnect the bypass hose (A).
  10. Loosen the heater pipe mounting bolts (A) and remove the heater pipe.

    Tightening torque: 19.6 - 24 N·m

    • Do not reuse the sealing bolts.
  11. Install in the reverse order of removal.
  12. Fill the engine with engine coolant. (Refer to Cooling System - "Engine Coolant")
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  14. Recheck the coolant level.

Inspection

Thermostat

  1. Immerse only the thermostat element in water and gradually heat the water.
    • Do not immerse the connecting part.
  2. Check the valve opening temperature. If the valve opening temperature does not meet the specification, replace the thermostat. Valve opening temperature: 100 ± 2 °C Fully open temperature: 115°C (239°F)
  3. Check the valve lift. If the valve lift does not meet the specification, replace the thermostat.

Valve lift: 8 mm (0.3 in) or more at 115 °C
