Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Serious scalding may be caused by hot coolant spurting out under high pressure from the radiator.
When filling engine coolant, be sure to cover the relay block with a cover and do not allow coolant to contact electrical parts or paint. If coolant spills, wash it off immediately.
Make sure the engine and radiator are cold to the touch.
Remove the radiator cap (A).
Remove the engine cover. (Refer to Engine and Transaxle Assembly - Engine Room Cover)
Loosen the drain plug (A) and drain the coolant.
Tighten the radiator drain plug securely.
After draining the engine coolant, clean the reservoir tank.
Slowly fill with a mixture of coolant and water (55~60%) (except for North America, Europe and China: 45~50%) through the radiator cap.
Use only genuine antifreeze/coolant.
For best corrosion protection, maintain the coolant concentration at a minimum of 55% year-round (except for North America, Europe and China: 45%). Coolant concentrations below 55% (except for North America, Europe and China: 45%) may not provide adequate corrosion or freeze protection.
Coolant concentration above 60% reduces cooling efficiency and is not recommended.
Always use new coolant.
Do not mix antifreezes/coolants of different brands.
Do not use additional rust inhibitors or anti-corrosion products; they may be incompatible with the coolant.
Perform the engine coolant filling mode with the GDS to remove air from the cooling system.
For an engine with an electric thermostat (opening temperature 100 °C), fill the coolant and, using the GDS, enter the coolant filling and air bleeding mode.
[Engine Coolant Filling Mode]
GDS manual text: In an engine equipped with a thermostat (ECT), current is supplied to the electric thermostat during coolant filling to sufficiently bleed the air.
1. Turn the ignition off. 2. Connect the GDS to the Data Link Connector (DLC). 3. Turn the ignition on. 4. Select "Vehicle, Year, Engine, System". 5. Select "Vehicle Software Control". ? Conditions to enter the filling mode 1. Shift lever in P and parking brake applied. 2. Engine off. 3. Coolant temperature 75 °C or higher. 4. Vehicle speed 0 km/h. 5. Heater off. 6. Perform the work indoors to raise the coolant temperature.[Check Coolant Temperature]? Conditions to cancel the filling mode 1. Coolant temperature is 90 °C or higher. 2. Stop filling mode option is selected on the diagnostic tool. 3. Conditions to enter the filling mode are not met. 4. A filling mode interrupt condition occurs, such as an ECT heater failure or WTS failure.
Do not race the engine.
Install the radiator cap and fill the reservoir tank with coolant to the "MAX" mark +0.4 L.
Stop the engine and wait for the coolant to cool down.
Repeat steps 8 through 10 until the coolant level stops dropping, then bleed the air from the cooling system.
It takes time to bleed all the air from the cooling system. Top up the coolant when it has completely cooled, then check the coolant level in the reservoir tank again within 2-3 days after replacing the coolant.
Coolant capacity approx. 6.6 L (1.66 US gal, 6.97 US qt, 5.81 liters)
