Seat Belt Pretensioner (BPT) Description and Operation
In this manual: Restraints
~1min read
Description
Seat belt pretensioners (BPT) are installed inside the center pillars (left and right). In a vehicle collision of a certain severity involving a frontal impact, the seat belt pretensioner helps reduce the injury force on front seat occupants by retracting the seat belt webbing. This prevents front occupants from being thrown forward and striking the steering wheel or instrument panel when the vehicle decelerates. (The seat belt pretensioner may also deploy in a side collision if the vehicle is equipped with side airbags or curtain airbags.)
