Emission Control System
EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM The content of toxic components in exhaust gas (CO, HC, NOx) is controlled by a combination of engine modifications and the addition of special control devices.
Modifications to the combustion chambers, intake manifold, camshaft, and ignition system form the basic control system.
The above modifications are combined into an efficient system that controls exhaust emission reduction while maintaining good drivability and fuel economy.
FUEL-AIR MIXTURE CONTROL SYSTEM [MULTI-POINT FUEL INJECTION (MFI) SYSTEM]
Using signals from the oxygen sensor, the multi-point fuel injection (MFI) system controls the injection start timing and injection duration of the injector installed in the intake manifold for each cylinder, so as to provide the optimum air-fuel mixture ratio and reduce exhaust emissions.
As a result, the exhaust gas produced by the engine has a specific composition that allows the use of a three-way catalytic converter to reduce the concentration of toxic substances. The catalytic converter is used to convert three groups of harmful substances ((1) hydrocarbons (HC), (2) carbon monoxide (CO), and (3) nitrogen oxides (NOx)) into harmless substances.
The multi-point fuel injection (MFI) system can operate in two modes:
1. Open-loop control of the air-fuel mixture is performed according to data previously stored in the engine control module (ECM).
2. Closed-loop control of the air-fuel mixture is performed according to the oxygen sensor signals sent to the engine control module (ECM).
