Front Drive Shaft (Double Offset Joint (DOJ) and Birfield (BJ) CV Joint) - Disassembly, Inspection
FRONT DRIVE SHAFT (DOUBLE OFFSET JOINT (DOJ) AND BIRFIELD (BJ) CV JOINT) - COMPONENTS
DISASSEMBLY
1. Do not disassemble the outer Birfield (BJ) CV joint.
2. Use only the specified special grease to lubricate the drive shaft CV joints.
Do not mix old and new grease, or different types of grease.
3. After removal, replace the CV joint boot clamps with new ones.

1. Remove the clamps securing the inner CV joint boot, then remove the boot from the outer race of the inner CV joint.
Be careful not to damage the boot during removal.

2. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, remove the large retainer ring from the outer CV joint race.
3. Pull the drive shaft out of the outer CV joint race.

4. Remove the small retainer ring, then remove the inner CV joint race assembly with the cage and balls.
5. Clean the inner race of the CV joint assembly, together with the cage and balls, without disassembling the assembly.

6. Remove the boot clamps of the outer CV joint, and remove the boot from the outer CV joint housing.
If the CV joint boot is to be reinstalled, wrap the splined portion of the shaft with (plastic) insulation tape to prevent damage to the boot.
INSPECTION 1. Inspect the outer race of the inner CV joint, the inner race, the cage and the balls for damage or rust.
2. Inspect the splined portion of the drive shaft for signs of excessive wear.

3. Make sure there is no water, foreign matter, dirt or rust in the outer CV joint boot.
If the outer CV joint assembly is to be reinstalled, do not remove the grease from it.
Check that there is no foreign matter in the CV joint grease. If necessary, thoroughly clean the outer CV joint assembly of dirt and grease, then pack the CV joint with new multipurpose grease.
