Emergency Towing

~2min read

Front

Rear

If towing is required, we recommend that you have it done by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer or a commercial truck towing service.

If a towing service is not available in an emergency, your vehicle may be temporarily towed with a cable or chain attached to the emergency towing hook at the front (or rear) of the vehicle.

Be extremely careful when towing the vehicle with a cable or chain. The driver must remain in the vehicle to steer and operate the brakes.

Towing in this manner may only be performed on paved roads for a short distance and at low speeds. Also, the wheels, axles, power train, steering, and brakes must be in good condition.

CAUTION

The driver must remain in the vehicle to steer and brake while the vehicle is being towed. No passengers other than the driver should be in the vehicle.

Always observe these emergency towing precautions:

  • Place the ignition key in the ACC position so that the steering wheel is not locked.
  • Place the shift lever in the N (Neutral) position.
  • Release the parking brake.
  • Press the brake pedal harder than normal, as braking effectiveness will be reduced.
  • More effort will be required to turn the steering wheel because the power steering system will be disabled.
  • Use a vehicle heavier than your own to tow your vehicle.
  • The drivers of both vehicles should communicate with each other frequently.
  • Before emergency towing, make sure the hook is not broken or damaged.
  • Securely attach the tow strap or chain to the hook.
  • Do not jerk the hook. Apply steady, even force.
  • Use a tow strap or chain no longer than 5 m (16 ft). Attach a white or red cloth (approx. 30 cm (12 in.) wide) to the middle of the strap or chain for better visibility.
  • Move carefully so the tow strap or chain remains taut during towing.
  • Before towing, check the Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) for fluid leaks under the vehicle. If the IVT is leaking fluid, a flatbed truck or tow truck must be used.

NOTICE

Accelerate or decelerate the vehicle slowly and gradually while maintaining tension on the tow strap or chain to start or control the vehicle; otherwise the tow hooks and vehicle may be damaged.

NOTICE

To avoid damage to the vehicle and vehicle components when towing:

  • Always pull straight ahead when using the tow hooks. Do not pull from the side or at a vertical angle. • Do not use the tow hooks to pull the vehicle out of mud, sand, or other conditions from which the vehicle cannot be freed under its own power.
  • Limit vehicle speed to 10 mph (15 km/h) and drive less than 1 mile (1.5 km) when towing to avoid serious damage to the Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT).
  • The vehicle with Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) may be towed behind another vehicle only if there are no oil leaks. Check for oil leaks. Towing a vehicle with an oil leak may damage the transmission.
