If the engine overheats
If your temperature gauge indicates overheating, you experience a loss of power, or you hear a loud knocking or pinging noise, the engine may be overheating. If this happens, you should:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as it is safe.
2. Place the shift lever in P (Park) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioner is ON, turn it OFF.
3. If the engine coolant is leaking under the vehicle or steam is coming from under the hood, stop the engine. Do not open the hood until the coolant stops leaking or the steam stops. If you cannot see any coolant loss or steam, leave the engine running and check that the engine cooling fan is operating. If the fan does not operate, turn off the engine.
WARNING
While the engine is running, keep hands, clothing and tools away from moving parts such as the cooling fan and drive belt to prevent serious injury.
4. Check whether the water pump drive belt is present.
(1) If it is present, check that it is tight.
(2) If the drive belt appears to be satisfactory, check for coolant leaks from the radiator, hoses or under the vehicle. (If the air conditioner has been in use, it is normal for cold water to drip from it when you stop.)
5. If the water pump drive belt is broken or engine coolant has leaked out, stop the engine immediately and we recommend that you contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for assistance.
WARNING
NEVER remove the radiator cap or drain plug while the engine and radiator are hot. Hot coolant and steam may be expelled under pressure, causing serious injury.
Turn off the engine and wait until the engine cools down. Be extremely careful when removing the radiator cap. Wrap a thick towel around it and turn it slowly counterclockwise to the first stop. Step back while the pressure is released from the cooling system. When you are sure all pressure has been released, press down on the cap using a thick towel and continue turning counterclockwise to remove it.
6. If you cannot find the cause of overheating, wait until the engine temperature has returned to normal. Then, if coolant was lost, carefully add coolant to the reservoir until the level reaches the halfway mark.
7. Drive carefully and watch for further signs of overheating. If overheating occurs again, we recommend that you contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for assistance.
NOTICE
- Significant coolant loss indicates a leak in the cooling system. We recommend having the system inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
- When the engine has overheated due to low engine coolant level, adding engine coolant suddenly may cause the engine to crack. To prevent damage, add coolant slowly in small amounts.
