Winter Precautions

~3min read

Use High-Quality Ethylene Glycol Coolant

Your vehicle is delivered with a high-quality ethylene glycol-based coolant in the cooling system. This is the only type of coolant that should be used because it helps prevent corrosion in the cooling system, lubricates the water pump, and prevents freezing. Be sure to replace or add coolant according to the maintenance schedule in Chapter 8. Before winter, have the coolant checked to make sure its freezing point is sufficient for the temperatures expected in winter.

Change to "Winter" Oil if Necessary

In some climates, a lower viscosity "winter grade" oil is recommended for use in cold weather. See Chapter 8 for recommendations. If you are not sure which grade of oil to use, consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

Check the Battery and Cables

Winter places an additional load on the battery system. Visually inspect the battery and cables as described in Chapter 8. The charge level of your battery can be checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer or service station.

Check the Spark Plugs and Ignition System

Inspect the spark plugs as described in Chapter 8 and replace them if necessary. Also check all ignition wiring and components to make sure they are not cracked, worn, or damaged in any way.

Use Approved Windshield Washer Antifreeze in the System

To keep the water in the windshield washer system from freezing, add approved windshield washer antifreeze solution in accordance with the instructions on the container. Windshield washer antifreeze can be purchased from an authorized HYUNDAI dealer and most auto parts stores. Do not use engine coolant or other types of antifreeze, as they may damage paint.

Prevent the Parking Brake from Freezing

Under some conditions, your parking brake may freeze in the applied position. This is most likely to happen when snow or ice has accumulated around or near the rear brakes, or if the brakes are wet. If there is a risk the parking brake may freeze, apply it only temporarily while you place the shift selector in P and block the rear wheels so the vehicle does not roll. Then release the parking brake.

Do not allow ice and snow to accumulate under

In certain conditions, snow and ice may accumulate under the fenders and interfere with steering. When driving in severe winter conditions, where this may occur, periodically check under the vehicle to make sure the front wheel movement and steering components are not obstructed.

Do not place foreign objects or materials in the engine compartment.

Placing foreign objects or materials that obstruct engine cooling in the engine compartment may cause a malfunction or fire. The manufacturer is not responsible for any damage caused by such placement.

To Prevent Door Locks from Freezing

To prevent the locks from freezing, spray an approved anti-icing fluid or glycerin into the key hole. If the lock is blocked by ice, spray it with an approved de-icing fluid. If the lock is frozen inside, you may be able to thaw it with a heated key. Handle the heated key carefully to avoid injury.
