  • Check for leaks under the vehicle.
  • Make sure there are no obstacles behind you if you intend to back up.

Before Starting

  • Make sure all doors, including the tailgate and engine hood, are properly closed and locked.
  • Adjust the seat position and steering wheel.
  • Adjust the inside and outside mirrors.
  • Make sure all lights work.
  • Fasten your seat belt. Make sure all passengers have fastened their seat belts.
  • Make sure the instrument panel indicators and warning messages appear when the ignition key is in the ON position.
  • Make sure all carried items are stored or secured.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, observe the following precautions:

  • ALWAYS fasten your seat belt. All passengers must be properly secured with seat belts every time the vehicle is moving. For more information, refer to "Fuel Filter" in Chapter 2.
  • Always drive carefully. Anticipate carelessness or mistakes by other drivers or pedestrians.
  • Concentrate on driving. Driver distraction can cause accidents.
  • Leave enough space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead.

WARNING

If you have been drinking or taking drugs, do NOT DRIVE.

Driving under the influence is dangerous and may result in an accident and SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

Driving under the influence is a leading cause of highway deaths every year. Even a small amount of alcohol affects your reflexes, perception, and judgment. Just one drink can reduce your ability to respond to changing conditions and emergencies, and your reaction time worsens with each additional drink.

Driving under the influence of drugs is just as dangerous, if not more dangerous, than driving under the influence of alcohol.

You are much more likely to be involved in a serious accident if you drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If you have been drinking or have taken drugs, do not drive. Do not get into a vehicle with a driver who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Choose a designated driver or call a taxi.
