Driving Your Vehicle

Towing a Trailer (For Europe)

~2min read

If you plan to tow your vehicle, first check with your country's Ministry of Transport to determine the legal requirements. Since regulations vary, requirements for towing trailers, other vehicles, or other types of equipment may differ. Consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for parts before towing.

Remember that you must adopt a different driving style when your vehicle is equipped with a trailer. Towing a trailer affects handling, durability, and fuel economy. Proper towing requires the use of suitable equipment, which must be used correctly. Damage to your vehicle caused by improper towing is not covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

This section contains proven tips and safety rules for towing a trailer. Many of them are important for your safety and the safety of your passengers. Please read this section carefully before towing a trailer.

WARNING

Observe the following precautions:

  • If you use unsuitable equipment and/or do not drive properly, you may lose control of the vehicle when towing a trailer. For example, if the trailer is too heavy, braking performance will be reduced. You and your passengers risk serious or fatal injury. Tow a trailer only after completing all steps described in this chapter.
  • Before towing, make sure that the trailer weight, maximum combined weight (GCW), maximum vehicle weight (GVW), maximum axle load (GAW), and tongue load of the trailer comply with all permissible limits.

Intelligent

  • The permissible maximum axle load of the front or rear axles must not be exceeded by more than 15%, and the permissible maximum vehicle load must not be exceeded by more than 10% or 100 kg, whichever is less. In addition, do not exceed 100 km/h for M1 category vehicles or 80 km/h for N1 category vehicles.
  • When towing a trailer with an M1 category vehicle, the additional load on the towing device may cause the maximum load capacity of the tire to be exceeded, but by 15% at most. In this case, do not exceed a speed of 100 km/h and increase the tire pressure by at least 0.2 bar.
