What to Do in an Emergency

If the engine overheats

~2min read

If the temperature gauge indicates overheating, you experience a loss of power, or you hear a loud clicking or knocking noise, the engine may be overheating. If this happens, you should:

1. Leave the road and stop the vehicle as soon as possible.

2. Shift the transmission lever to P (Park) (automatic transmission) or N (Neutral) (manual transmission) and apply the parking brake. If the air conditioner is on, turn it off.

3. If coolant is leaking under the vehicle or steam is coming from under the hood, stop the engine. Do not open the hood until the coolant stops leaking or steaming. If there is no loss of engine coolant and no steam is visible, let the engine run and make sure the engine cooling fan is operating. If the fan does not operate, turn off the engine.

4. Check the water pump drive belt. If it is present, check that it is properly tensioned. If the belt is in good condition, check for coolant leaks from the radiator, hoses, or under the vehicle. (If the air conditioner was used, cold water may drip from it when you stop.)

WARNING

While the engine is running, keep hair, hands, and clothing away from moving parts such as the fan and drive belts to avoid injury.

5. If the water pump timing belt is damaged or the engine coolant reservoir is leaking, stop the engine immediately and contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

6. If you cannot find the cause of overheating, wait until the engine temperature returns to normal. Then, if coolant has been lost, carefully add coolant to the reservoir to bring the level to the middle.

7. Proceed with caution and watch for other signs of overheating. If overheating occurs again, we recommend contacting an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

WARNING

Do not remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Hot coolant may spray out of the opening and cause severe burns.

NOTICE

A significant drop in coolant level indicates a leak in the cooling system. Therefore, we recommend that your vehicle's system be inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
