Your Vehicle's Safety System

Driver and Passenger Front Airbags

~3min read

Your vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) and knee-shoulder seat belts for both the driver and the passenger.

The SRS consists of airbags located in the center of the steering wheel, in the lower driver's airbag under the steering wheel, and on the passenger side in the instrument panel trim above the glove box.

The airbags are marked with the letters "AIR BAG" embossed on the cover trim.

The purpose of the SRS is to provide the driver and front passengers with additional protection beyond that offered by the seat belt system alone in the event of a frontal impact of sufficient severity.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of serious injury or death from front airbag deployment, observe the following precautions:

  • Seat belts must always be worn to help passengers maintain the correct position.
  • Move the seat as far as possible from the front airbags without losing control of the vehicle.
  • Never lean against the door or center console.
  • Do not allow the front passenger to place their feet on the instrument panel.
  • Do not place any objects (such as an emergency cover, cell phone holder, cup holder, air freshener or stickers) over or near the airbag modules in the steering wheel, instrument panel, windshield, or front passenger airbag cover above the glove box. Such objects may cause injury if the vehicle is in an accident severe enough to deploy the airbags.
  • Do not attach any objects to the windshield or rearview mirror.

Passenger Front Airbag ON/OFF Switch

The purpose of this switch is to deactivate the front passenger airbag when transporting passengers who are at increased risk of airbag-related injury due to age, size, or medical condition.

To deactivate the front passenger airbag:

Insert the key or a similar hard tool into the passenger front airbag ON/OFF switch and turn it to the OFF position. The passenger airbag OFF indicator () will illuminate and remain on until the front passenger airbag is activated.

To reactivate the front passenger airbag:

Insert the key or a similar hard tool into the passenger front airbag ON/OFF switch and turn it to the ON position. The passenger airbag ON indicator () will illuminate and remain on for 60 seconds.

Information

The passenger airbag ON/OFF indicator illuminates for approximately 4 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position.

WARNING

Never allow an adult passenger to sit in the front passenger seat when the passenger airbag OFF indicator is illuminated. The airbag will not deploy in a collision while the indicator is on. Turn on the passenger front airbag or ask your passenger to move to the rear seat.

WARNING

If the passenger front airbag ON/OFF switch is malfunctioning, the following conditions may occur:

  • The airbag warning light ( ) in the instrument cluster will illuminate.
  • The front passenger airbag OFF indicator ( ) will not illuminate, and the ON indicator ( ) will illuminate and turn off after approximately 60 seconds. The front passenger airbag will deploy in a frontal collision even if the front passenger airbag ON/OFF switch is set to the OFF position.
  • HYUNDAI recommends that an authorized HYUNDAI dealer inspect the front passenger airbag ON/OFF switch and the SRS airbag system as soon as possible.
