What to Do in an Emergency

Quick Start

~2min read

Jump starting can be dangerous if it is not done correctly. Follow the jump starting procedures described in this section to avoid serious injury or vehicle damage. If you are unsure how to start your vehicle properly, we strongly recommend that you have a service technician or towing service do it for you.

WARNING

To prevent SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH to yourself or others, always follow these precautions when working near or handling the battery:

Always read and follow the instructions carefully when handling the battery.

Wear protective goggles designed to protect your eyes from acid splashes.

Keep all flames, sparks, or smoking materials away from the battery.

Hydrogen gas is always present in the battery cells. It is highly flammable and may explode if ignited.

Keep batteries out of the reach of children.

Batteries contain sulfuric acid, which is highly corrosive. Do not allow acid to contact your eyes, skin, or clothing.

If acid gets into your eyes, flush them with clean water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention immediately. If acid contacts your skin, wash the area thoroughly. If you feel pain or burning, seek medical attention immediately.

  • When lifting a plastic-case battery, excessive pressure on the case may cause battery acid to leak. Lift using the battery carrier or with your hands on opposite corners.
  • Do not attempt to jump start the vehicle if the battery is frozen. NOTICE
  • NEVER attempt to charge the battery while the vehicle battery cables are connected to the battery.
  • The electrical ignition system operates at high voltage. NEVER touch these components while the engine is running or the ignition switch is in the ON position.
  • Do not allow the jumper cables (+) and (-) to contact each other. This may cause sparks.
  • The battery may burst or explode when jump starting a low or frozen battery.

NOTICE

To prevent damage to your vehicle:

  • Use only a 12-volt power source (battery or jump starter system) to jump start your vehicle.
  • Do not attempt to start the vehicle by push-starting.

Information

Improperly disposed of batteries can harm the environment and human health. Dispose of the battery in accordance with your local laws or regulations.
