Seat Belt Pretensioner

~3min read

Your vehicle is equipped with seat belt retractor pretensioners for the driver and front passenger seats, and for the rear passengers (if equipped).

The purpose of the pretensioner is to keep the seat belts snug against the passenger's body in certain frontal or side collisions. Seat belt pretensioners may be activated in collisions when the frontal or side impact(s) are severe enough, together with the airbags.

When the vehicle stops suddenly or the passenger attempts to lean forward quickly, the seat belt retractor locks in position.

In certain frontal collisions, the pretensioner activates and pulls the seat belt into closer contact with the passenger's body.

If the system detects excessive seat belt tension on the driver's or passenger's belt when the pretensioner system is activated, the load limiter inside the pretensioner retractor will release some of the pressure on the belt.

WARNING

  • Always wear your seat belt and sit properly in your seat.
  • Do not use a seat belt that is loose or twisted. A loose or twisted seat belt will not properly protect you in the event of an accident.
  • Do not place anything near the buckle. It may interfere with latching and cause malfunction.
  • Always replace pretensioners after activation or an accident.
  • NEVER attempt to inspect, service, repair, or replace the pretensioners yourself. This must be done by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
  • Do not strike the seat belt assemblies.

WARNING

Do not touch the seat belt pretensioners for several minutes after they have been activated. When the seat belt pretensioner mechanism operates during a collision, the retractor may become hot and cause burns.

CAUTION

Body repair work on the front of the vehicle may damage the seat belt pretensioner system. Therefore, we recommend that the system be serviced by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

The seat belt pretensioner system consists mainly of the following components. Their location is shown in the illustration above:

(1) SRS warning lamp
(2) Seat belt retractor pretensioner
(3) SRS control module
(4) Rear retractor pretensioner (if equipped)

NOTICE

The sensor that activates the SRS control module is linked to the seat belt pretensioners. The SRS warning lamp on the instrument cluster illuminates for approximately 6 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, and then it should turn off.

If the pretensioner is not functioning properly, the warning lamp illuminates even if the SRS airbag is normal. If the warning lamp does not illuminate, remains on, or illuminates while driving, we recommend that the seat belt pretensioners and/or SRS control module be inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

Information

  • The driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners may be activated in certain frontal or side collisions.
  • When the seat belt pretensioners activate, a loud noise may be heard, and fine dust may be visible in the passenger compartment, which may look like smoke. This is a normal operating condition and is not hazardous.
  • Although it is non-toxic, fine dust may cause skin irritation and should not be inhaled for a prolonged period. Thoroughly wash all exposed skin after an accident in which the seat belt pretensioners have deployed.
