Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist Malfunction

If Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist does not operate properly, the warning message "Check Forward Safety System" appears, andandthe warning lights on the instrument cluster illuminate. If this occurs, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist Limitation

If the windshield where the front view camera or sensor is located is covered with foreign matter, such as snow or rain, the detection performance may be reduced and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may be temporarily limited or disabled.

If this occurs, the Forward Safety system is limited. The "Camera Blocked" warning message appears, andandthe warning lights on the instrument cluster illuminate.

The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist system will operate properly once snow, rain, or foreign material is removed.

If the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist system does not operate properly after the obstruction (snow, rain, or foreign material) is removed, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

WARNING

  • Even if the warning message or indicator light does not illuminate on the cluster, the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may not operate properly.
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may not operate properly in areas (e.g., open terrain) where no objects are detected after the engine is started.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist Limitations

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may not operate properly, or it may operate unexpectedly, under the following conditions:

  • The detection sensor or surrounding area is contaminated or damaged.
  • The temperature around the front-view camera is high or low due to the surrounding environment.
  • The camera lens is contaminated due to tinted, film-coated, or coated windshield, damaged glass, or sticky foreign material (sticker, insect, etc.) on the glass.
  • Moisture is not removed or frozen from the windshield.
  • Washer fluid is continuously sprayed or the wipers are operating.
  • Driving in heavy rain or snow, or in dense fog.
  • The front view camera field of view is blocked by sun glare.
  • Street lights or oncoming vehicle headlights are reflected on a wet road surface, such as a puddle on the road.
  • An object is placed on the instrument panel.
  • Your vehicle is being towed.
  • The surroundings are very bright.
  • The surroundings are very dark, such as in a tunnel, etc.
  • The brightness changes suddenly, for example when entering or exiting a tunnel.
  • The outside brightness is low and the headlights are off or not bright.
  • When driving through steam, smoke, or shadows.
  • Only part of a vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist is detected.
  • The vehicle ahead is a bus, heavy truck, truck with an unusual cargo shape, trailer, etc.
  • The vehicle ahead has no taillights, or the taillights are located unusually, etc.
  • The outside brightness is low and the taillights of the vehicle ahead are off or not bright.
  • The rear of the vehicle ahead is small, or the vehicle does not appear normal, for example when the vehicle is tilted, overturned, or its side is visible, etc.
  • The ground clearance of the vehicle ahead is low or high.
  • A vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist suddenly crosses in front of your vehicle.
  • The vehicle ahead is detected late.
  • The vehicle ahead is suddenly blocked by an obstacle.
  • The vehicle ahead suddenly changes lanes or decelerates sharply.
  • The vehicle ahead is curved due to its shape.
  • The speed of the vehicle ahead is high or low.
  • The vehicle ahead steers in the direction opposite to your vehicle to avoid a collision.
  • When a vehicle is ahead, your vehicle changes lanes at low speed.
  • The vehicle ahead is covered with snow.
  • You are leaving or entering an alley.
  • Unstable driving
  • You are at a roundabout and the vehicle ahead is not detected.
  • You are continuously driving in a circle.
  • The vehicle ahead has an unusual shape.
  • The vehicle ahead is traveling uphill or downhill.
  • A pedestrian or cyclist is not fully detected, for example, when the pedestrian is leaning or not walking fully upright.
  • A pedestrian or cyclist is wearing clothing or equipment that makes them difficult to detect.

The illustration above shows that the front-view camera is capable of detecting vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.

  • A pedestrian or cyclist ahead is moving very fast.
  • A pedestrian or cyclist ahead is short or is in a low posture.
  • A pedestrian or cyclist ahead has limited mobility.
  • A pedestrian or cyclist ahead is crossing the direction of travel.
  • There is a group of pedestrians, cyclists, or a large crowd ahead.
  • A pedestrian or cyclist wears clothing that easily blends into the background, making it difficult to detect.
  • A pedestrian or cyclist is difficult to distinguish from similarly shaped structures in the surroundings.
  • You are passing a pedestrian, cyclist, road sign, structure, etc. near an intersection.
  • Driving in a parking lot
  • Driving through a barrier gate, construction site, unpaved road, partially paved road, rough road, speed bumps, etc.
  • Driving on a sloped road, curved road, etc.
  • Driving along a roadside with trees or golden street lights.
  • Excessive vehicle vibration during driving due to adverse road conditions
  • The height of your vehicle is lowered or raised due to heavy loads, incorrect tire pressure, etc.
  • Driving on a narrow road where trees or grass overgrow.
  • Interference from electromagnetic waves, such as driving in an area with strong radio waves or electrical interference

WARNING

• Driving on a curved road

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may not detect other vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists ahead of you on curved roads, which adversely affects sensor performance. This may result in no warning or braking assistance when needed.

When driving on a curved road, maintain a safe braking distance and, if necessary, steer the vehicle and depress the brake pedal to reduce driving speed to keep a safe distance.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may detect a vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist in an adjacent lane or outside the driving lane when driving on a curved road.

If this occurs, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may unnecessarily warn the driver and control the brakes. Always check the traffic conditions around the vehicle.

• Driving on an inclined road

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may not detect other vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists ahead of you when driving uphill or downhill, which adversely affects sensor performance.

This may result in an unnecessary warning or braking assistance, or no warning or braking assistance when required.

In addition, vehicle speed may decrease rapidly when a vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist ahead is suddenly detected.

Always watch the road when driving uphill or downhill, and if necessary, steer the vehicle and depress the brake pedal to reduce driving speed to keep a safe distance.

• Lane changes

[A]: Your vehicle
[B]: Vehicle changing lanes

When a vehicle moves into your lane from an adjacent lane, it cannot be detected by the sensor until it is within the sensor's detection range. Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may not immediately detect a vehicle that changes lanes abruptly. In this case, you must maintain a safe braking distance and, if necessary, steer the vehicle and depress the brake pedal to reduce driving speed to keep a safe distance.

[A]: Your vehicle
[B]: Vehicle changing lanes
[C]: Vehicle in the same lane

When the vehicle ahead moves out of the lane, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may not immediately detect the vehicle that is now ahead of you.

In this case, maintain a safe braking distance and, if necessary, steer the vehicle and depress the brake pedal to reduce driving speed to keep a safe distance.

• Vehicle detection

If the vehicle ahead is carrying cargo that extends rearward from the cab, or if the vehicle ahead is higher than your vehicle, extra caution is required. Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may not be able to detect cargo extending from the vehicle. In these cases, maintain a safe braking distance from the rearmost object and, if necessary, steer the vehicle and depress the brake pedal to reduce driving speed to keep a safe distance.

WARNING

  • When towing a trailer or another vehicle, we recommend that Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist be turned off for safety reasons.
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may not work properly if objects with shapes or characteristics similar to vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists are detected.
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist does not operate for bicycles, motorcycles, or wheeled objects such as luggage bags, shopping carts, or strollers.
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may not operate properly if strong electromagnetic waves interfere.
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may not operate for 15 seconds after the vehicle is started or the front camera is initialized.
