Driving Your Vehicle

Proper Driving Practices

~2min read
  • Never shift the shift lever from P (Park) or N (Neutral) to any other position with the accelerator pedal depressed.
  • Never move the shift lever to the P (Park) position while the vehicle is moving. Make sure the vehicle has come to a complete stop before attempting to shift to R (Reverse) or D (Drive).
  • Do not shift the shift lever to N (Neutral) while driving. Doing so may result in an accident because of loss of engine braking, and the transmission may be damaged.
  • When driving uphill or downhill, shift to D (Drive) to move forward or R (Reverse) to move backward, and check the gear position shown on the instrument cluster before driving. If the vehicle moves in the direction opposite to the selected gear, the engine may stop and a serious accident may occur. Never attempt to select a gear that is opposite to the direction of vehicle movement. Stop the vehicle before shifting to the required gear.
  • Do not drive with your foot resting on the brake pedal. Even light but constant pressure on the pedal may cause the brakes to overheat, wear rapidly, and possibly fail.
  • When driving with the paddle shifters, decelerate before downshifting. Otherwise, the lower gear may not engage if the engine speed is outside the allowable range.
  • Always apply the parking brake when leaving the vehicle. Do not rely on shifting the transmission into P (Park) to keep the vehicle from moving.
  • Be extremely careful when driving on slippery surfaces. Be especially careful when braking, accelerating, or shifting gears. On slippery surfaces, a sudden change in vehicle speed may cause the drive wheels to lose traction with the road, which may result in loss of vehicle control and an accident.
  • Optimum vehicle performance and fuel economy are achieved by depressing and releasing the accelerator pedal smoothly.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH:

  • ALWAYS wear your seat belt. In a collision, an unbelted passenger is significantly more likely to be seriously injured or killed than a properly belted passenger.
  • Avoid high speeds when driving through curves or turns.
  • Do not make quick steering movements, such as sudden lane changes or rapid, sharp turns.
  • The risk of rollover greatly increases if you lose control of your vehicle at highway speeds.
  • Loss of control often occurs when two or more wheels leave the paved surface and the driver turns to re-enter the road.
  • If your vehicle leaves the paved surface, do not turn sharply. Instead, brake gently before steering back onto the road.
  • HYUNDAI recommends obeying all posted speed limits.
