Towing a Trailer - Important Information

~3min read

Here are some important points if you decide to tow a trailer:

  • Consider using a trailer hitch that includes sway control through the use of anti-sway bars. Consult your trailer hitch dealer about the different types of trailer sway control hitches for your vehicle and trailer.
  • Do not tow a trailer with your vehicle during the first 1200 miles (2000 km) to allow the engine to break in properly. Failure to observe this caution may result in serious engine or transmission damage.
  • When towing a trailer, consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for additional information on extra requirements, such as a towing kit, etc.
  • Always drive at a moderate speed (less than 60 mph (100 km/h)) or the specified towing speed limit.
  • On long grades, do not exceed 70 km/h or the posted towing speed limit, whichever is lower.
  • Carefully observe the weight and load limits specified on the following pages.

Trailer Weight

What is the maximum safe trailer weight? It must never weigh more than the maximum trailer weight with trailer brakes. But even this may be too heavy. It depends on how you plan to use the trailer. For example, speed, altitude, road grade, outside air temperature, and how often your vehicle is used for towing a trailer are all important. The ideal trailer weight may also depend on any special equipment installed on your vehicle.

Tongue Load

Tongue load is an important weight to measure because it affects the gross vehicle weight (GVW) of your vehicle. The trailer tongue should weigh no more than 10% of the total loaded trailer weight, within the maximum allowable trailer tongue load.

After you have loaded the trailer, weigh the trailer and then the tongue separately to see if the weights are correct. If they are not, you can correct them by simply moving some items within the trailer.

WARNING

Observe the following precautions:

  • Never load a trailer with more weight at the rear than at the front. The front should carry approximately 60% of the total trailer load; the rear should carry approximately 40% of the total trailer load.
  • Never exceed the maximum weight limits of the towing vehicle or trailer hitch equipment. Improper loading may cause damage to your vehicle and/or injury. Check weight and load at a commercial scale or highway patrol station equipped with scales.

Information

As altitude increases, engine performance decreases. Above 3,280 feet (1000 m) above sea level, and for every additional 3,280 feet (1000 m), reduce the combined vehicle/trailer weight (trailer tongue weight + gross vehicle weight) by 10%.

Towing a Trailer - Towing Capacity Limits

The table below shows the maximum trailer weight for your vehicle type based on the number of passengers in the vehicle. Do not exceed the maximum allowable trailer weight as shown. The maximum trailer weight includes the weight of the trailer, any cargo in the trailer, and any other equipment or items attached to the trailer. Exceeding this towing load may seriously affect vehicle handling and performance and may damage the engine and transmission.

Note: The maximum weight recommendations are calculated based on the following assumptions:

  • Passengers occupy seats from the front of the vehicle to the rear.
  • Each passenger weighs 150 lbs (68 kg).
  • Each passenger in the cargo area carries 15 lbs (7 kg) of cargo.
