Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)

~2min read

ABS provides enhanced vehicle stability and braking efficiency under most braking conditions. The system automatically prevents wheel lock-up and improves vehicle steering control during braking.

ABS performs a self-check each time the vehicle is started and driven to ensure that ABS is functioning properly. During this self-check, you may hear a slight clicking sound and some accompanying motor noise.

ABS activates during braking when the system detects that one or more wheels are beginning to lock. Road conditions such as ice, snow, gravel, bumps, railroad tracks, loose debris, or emergency stops can increase the likelihood of ABS activation.

You may also experience the following normal characteristics when ABS activates:

ABS motor noise or clicking sounds (you may continue to hear these for a short time after stopping)

  • Brake pedal pulsation
  • A slight drop in brake pedal height at the end of the stop

ABS is designed to operate with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) tires. Modification may degrade ABS performance.

  • The ABS contains complex electronic equipment that may be susceptible to interference caused by improper installation or high-powered radio transmitting equipment. This interference may result in a possible loss of anti-lock braking system function. Installation of such equipment must be performed by qualified specialists.
  • Pumping the anti-lock brakes will reduce their effectiveness and may result in a collision. Pumping makes stopping distance longer. Simply apply firm pressure to the brake pedal when you need to slow down or stop.
  • ABS cannot prevent the natural laws of physics from acting on the vehicle, nor can it increase braking or steering efficiency beyond what is afforded by the condition of the brakes and tires or the traction available.
  • ABS cannot prevent accidents, including those resulting from excessive speed in turns, following another vehicle too closely, or hydroplaning.
  • The capabilities of a vehicle equipped with ABS must never be exploited through reckless or dangerous driving that could jeopardize the safety of the user or others.

Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Warning Light

The amber ABS warning light illuminates when the ignition is switched to ON/RUN and may remain on for up to four seconds.

If the ABS warning light remains on or illuminates while driving, the anti-lock brake system is not functioning and service is required. However, the conventional brake system will continue to operate normally while the ABS warning light is on.

If the ABS warning light is on, the brake system should be serviced as soon as possible to restore the benefits of the anti-lock brake system. If the ABS warning light does not illuminate when the ignition is switched to ON/RUN, have the light repaired as soon as possible.
