Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) / Check Engine Light
The MIL is part of the onboard diagnostic system called OBD II, which monitors the engine and automatic transmission control systems. This warning light comes on when the ignition is turned to the ON/RUN position before the engine is started. If the light does not come on when the ignition switch is turned from the OFF position to the ON/RUN position, have the system checked promptly.
Certain conditions, such as a loose or missing fuel filler cap or poor-quality fuel, may cause the light to come on after the engine is started. The vehicle should be serviced if the light remains on through several typical driving cycles. In most situations, the vehicle will drive normally and will not require towing.
While the engine is running, the MIL may flash to warn of severe conditions that could cause an immediate loss of power or serious catalytic converter damage. If this occurs, the vehicle should be serviced by an authorized dealer as soon as possible.
