SAFETY
Hill Start Assist (HSA) System
In this manual: SAFETY
~2min read
The HSA system is designed to reduce rollback from a complete stop on a hill. If the driver releases the brake while stopped on a grade, HSA will continue to hold brake pressure for a short time. If the driver does not apply the accelerator before this time expires, the system releases brake pressure and the vehicle will roll down the hill normally.
To activate HSA:
- The function must be enabled.
- The vehicle must be stopped.
- The parking brake must be released.
- The driver's door must be closed. (With doors installed, the door must be closed. With doors removed, the driver's seat belt must be fastened.)
- The vehicle must be on a sufficient grade.
- The gear selection must match the direction of vehicle travel uphill (that is, the vehicle facing uphill is in a forward gear; the vehicle moving backward uphill is in REVERSE).
- HSA will operate in REVERSE and all forward gears. The system will not activate if the transmission is in PARK or NEUTRAL. For vehicles with a manual transmission, HSA remains active if the clutch is depressed.
Turning HSA On and Off
This feature can be turned on or off.
Towing with HSA
HSA will also help reduce rollback while towing a trailer.
- If you use a trailer brake controller with your trailer, the trailer brakes may be applied and released by the brake switch. If so, there may not be enough brake pressure to hold both the vehicle and trailer on a hill when the brake pedal is released. To avoid rolling down the hill when resuming acceleration, manually apply the trailer brake or apply more vehicle brake pressure before releasing the brake pedal.
- HSA is not a parking brake. Always fully apply the parking brake when leaving the vehicle. Also be sure to place the transmission in PARK (P).
- Failure to follow these warnings could result in a collision or serious injury.
