HDC is designed for off-road driving at low speeds in 4WD Low mode. HDC maintains vehicle speed when descending hills in various driving situations. HDC controls vehicle speed by actively applying the brakes.

HDC has three states:

  1. Off (the function is not switched on and will not activate).
  2. On (the function is switched on and ready, but activation conditions are not met, or the driver is actively overriding with the brake or accelerator).
  3. Active (the function is switched on and actively controlling vehicle speed).

Enabling HDC

HDC is enabled by pressing the HDC switch, but the following conditions must also be met to enable HDC:

  • The transmission is in 4WD Low mode.
  • Vehicle speed is below 8 km/h.
  • The parking brake is released.
  • The driver's door is closed. (If doors are fitted, the door must be closed. If doors are removed, the driver's seat belt must be fastened.)

HDC Activation

After HDC is enabled, it activates automatically when the vehicle speed decreases below a sufficient value. The HDC set speed is selected by the driver and adjusted using the +/- gear shift. The following summarizes the HDC set speeds:

HDC Set Speeds

  • P = No set speed. HDC may be enabled but will not activate
  • R = 0.6 mph (1 km/h)
  • N = 1.2 mph (2 km/h)
  • D = 0.6 mph (1 km/h)
  • 1st = 0.6 mph (1 km/h)
  • 2nd = 1.2 mph (2 km/h)
  • 3rd = 1.8 mph (3 km/h)
  • 4th = 2.5 mph (4 km/h)
  • 5th = 3.1 mph (5 km/h)
  • 6th = 3.7 mph (6 km/h)
  • 7th = 4.3 mph (7 km/h)
  • 8th = 5.0 mph (8 km/h)
  • 9th = 9 km/h — if equipped

NOTE:

During HDC operation, the +/- switch is used to select the target speed for HDC, but it does not affect the gear selected by the transmission. When HDC is active, the transmission will shift in accordance with the target speed selected by the driver and the prevailing driving conditions.

Driver override

The driver can cancel HDC activation at any time by using the accelerator or the brake.

HDC Deactivation

HDC will be deactivated but will remain available if any of the following conditions occur:

  • The driver cancels the HDC target speed by using the throttle or the brake.
  • Vehicle speed exceeds 32 km/h but remains below 40 mph (64 km/h).
  • The vehicle is on a grade of insufficient steepness, is on a level surface, or is on an uphill grade.
  • The vehicle is shifted into PARK.

HDC Disablement

HDC will be deactivated and disabled if any of the following conditions occur:

  • The driver presses the HDC switch.
  • The transmission is shifted out of 4WD Low mode.
  • Parking brake is applied.
  • The driver's door is opened. (With doors installed, the driver's door is opened; with doors removed, the driver's seat belt is unbuckled.)
  • The vehicle travels faster than 20 mph (32 km/h) for more than 70 seconds.
  • The vehicle travels faster than 40 mph (64 km/h) (HDC is disabled immediately).
  • HDC detects excessive brake temperature.

Driver Feedback

The HDC icon in the instrument cluster and the indicator in the HDC switch provide driver feedback on the HDC status.

  • The cluster icon and the switch indicator illuminate and remain steadily lit when HDC is on or active. This is the normal operating state for HDC.
  • The cluster icon and the switch indicator illuminate, flash for several seconds, then go out when the driver presses the HDC switch but the enabling conditions are not met.
  • The cluster icon and the switch indicator illuminate, flash for several seconds, then go out when HDC is disabled due to overspeed.
  • The cluster icon and the switch indicator illuminate and flash when HDC is deactivated due to brake overheating. The flashing stops and HDC becomes active again as soon as the brakes have cooled sufficiently.
