What to Do in an Emergency

Emergency Towing Precautions

~1min read
  • Turn the ENGINE START/STOP button to the ACC position so the steering wheel is not locked.
  • Place the shift lever in N (Neutral).
  • Release the parking brake.
  • Press the brake pedal harder than usual, as braking efficiency will be reduced.
  • More steering effort will be required because the power steering system will be disabled.
  • If you are driving down a long slope, the brakes may overheat and braking performance will be reduced. Stop frequently and allow the brakes to cool.
  • The vehicle should be towed at a speed of 25 km/h or less for a distance of 12 miles (20 km).

CAUTION! Automatic Transmission

  • If the vehicle is towed with all four wheels on the ground, it may only be towed forward. Make sure the transmission is in Neutral. Be sure the steering is unlocked by placing the ENGINE START/STOP button in the ACC position. The driver must be in the towed vehicle to operate the steering and brakes.
  • To avoid serious damage to the automatic transmission, limit the vehicle speed to 10 mph (15 km/h) and tow less than 1 mile (1.5 km).
  • Before towing, check the automatic transmission for fluid leaks under your vehicle. If the automatic transmission fluid is leaking, flatbed equipment or a tow dolly must be used.
