Emission Control System

~3min read

The emission control system in the Kia Opirus (2003–2011) protects both the environment and the vehicle occupants, including against carbon monoxide. This section explains measures to prevent CO poisoning, such as adequate ventilation when the vehicle is stationary. It also warns against technical modifications and emphasizes the importance of using unleaded fuel. Information on the fire hazard posed by hot exhaust systems is also included – a comprehensive guide to emission-related behavior.

The emission control system of your vehicle is covered by a written limited warranty. For details about this warranty, please refer to the warranty booklet supplied with the vehicle.

Vehicle Modifications

Your KIA vehicle should not be modified in any way. Modifications can impair vehicle performance, safety, and durability.

Modifications can also violate legal safety and emission regulations.

Damage to the vehicle as well as poor driving characteristics are not covered by the manufacturer's warranty if a modification to the vehicle is the cause of a defect.

Protective Measures Against Exhaust Gases (Carbon Monoxide)

WARNING

Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide (CO). Although it is colorless and odorless, carbon monoxide can be fatal if inhaled. Therefore, observe the following instructions to prevent CO poisoning.

  • Carbon monoxide occurs together with other exhaust gases. Therefore, have your vehicle inspected and repaired by an authorized KIA dealer immediately if exhaust odor can be detected inside the vehicle. If you ever suspect that engine exhaust may be entering the passenger compartment, drive the vehicle only after opening all windows completely. In this case, have the vehicle inspected and repaired immediately.
  • In partially or fully enclosed areas (e.g., a garage), always run the engine only for the time necessary to drive the vehicle in or out.
  • If the vehicle is to remain stationary with the engine running for an extended period, take measures to ensure effective room ventilation and a supply of fresh air.
  • Never remain seated in a parked vehicle with the engine running for an extended period.
  • Whenever the engine stalls unintentionally, have the emission control system inspected.
  • If the engine stalls or fails to start, do not crank the starter more than 3 times.

Excessively long cranking attempts on a stalled engine can damage the emission control system.

Catalytic Converter - Precautions

CAUTION - Fire Hazard

A hot exhaust system can ignite flammable material under your vehicle. Therefore, do not park your vehicle over easily combustible materials such as dry grass, paper, leaves, etc.

Your vehicle is equipped with catalytic converters, which are required as components of the emission control system to reduce exhaust emissions.

For this reason, the following precautions must be observed.

  • USE UNLEADED FUEL ONLY (applies to vehicles with gasoline engines).
  • Do not continue to drive the vehicle if any of the following signs of engine malfunction occur: misfiring, noticeable loss of power, or illumination of the malfunction indicator lamp. .
  • Never switch off the ignition while driving, and never coast downhill with the ignition off and a gear engaged.
  • Do not run the engine at high speeds for an extended period (5 minutes or longer) while the vehicle is stationary.
  • Never modify or adjust components of the emission control system. Inspections and adjustments must be performed only by qualified technicians.

Failure to observe these precautions can damage the catalytic converters or other vehicle components.

Furthermore, failure to observe these precautions may void warranty claims.

The emission control system of the Kia Opirus 2003–2011 plays a key role in meeting legal emission regulations and protecting the environment. The catalytic converter effectively reduces harmful exhaust emissions.

Observing the instructions for handling the emission control system and the catalytic converter is essential to avoid damage and to preserve warranty claims. This keeps the Kia Opirus environmentally friendly and reliable.
