Airbag Disposal

Special Service Tools Required

Deployment Tool 0957A-34100A. Before disposing of any airbags or side airbags (including those in a complete vehicle for disposal), the airbags or side airbags must be deployed. If the vehicle is still under warranty, the Service Manager must give permission and/or special instructions before the airbags or side airbags are deployed. Only after the airbags or side airbags have deployed (for example, as a result of a vehicle collision) may they be disposed of. If the airbags or side airbags appear undamaged (not deployed), handle them with special care. Follow this procedure. Deploying Airbags in the Vehicle. If a vehicle with an SRS system is to be fully scrapped, its airbags or side airbags must be deployed while still in the vehicle. Airbags or side airbags are not considered repairable parts and must never be installed in another vehicle.
  1. Turn the ignition OFF and disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least three minutes.
  2. Make sure each airbag or side airbag is securely mounted.
  3. Make sure the special tool operates correctly by following the check procedure.
    1. Driver airbag:
      • Remove the driver airbag and install the SST (0957A-3S100).
      • Install the driver airbag onto the steering wheel.
    2. Front passenger airbag:
      • Remove the glove box housing, then disconnect the connector between the passenger airbag and the SRS main harness.
      • Install the SST (0957A-3S100).
    3. Side airbag:
      • Disconnect the 2P connector between the side airbag and the wiring harness.
      • Install the SST (0957A-3F100).
    4. Curtain airbag:
      • Disconnect the 2-pin connector between the curtain airbag and the wire harness.
      • Install the SST (0957A-3S100).
    5. Seat belt pretensioner:
      • Disconnect the 2P connector from the seat belt pretensioner.
      • Install the SST (0957A-3S100).
  4. Place the deployment tool at a distance of at least thirty feet (10 meters) from the airbag.
  5. Connect a 12-volt battery to the tool.
  6. Press the deployment switch on the tool. The airbag should deploy (deployment is clearly audible and visible: a loud noise and rapid inflation of the bag, followed by slow deflation).
  7. Dispose of the airbag as a complete unit. No parts may be reused. Place it in a strong plastic bag and seal it securely.
  8. Make sure the special tool operates correctly by following the test procedure on this page.
  9. Place the airbag face up, and the EFD (Emergency Fastening Device) and hood actuator must be stacked no more than 5 tires high, outdoors on a level surface at least thirty feet (10 meters) away from any obstacles or people.
  10. Connect a 12-volt battery to the tool.
  11. Press the deployment switch on the tool. The airbag should deploy (deployment is clearly audible and visible: a loud noise and rapid inflation of the bag, followed by slow deflation).
  12. Dispose of the airbag as a complete unit. No parts may be reused. Place it in a strong plastic bag and seal it securely.
Deploying an Airbag Outside the Vehicle. If an undamaged airbag has been removed from a scrapped vehicle, or a defect or damage is found during transport, storage or service, it must be deployed as follows:Disposal of a Damaged Airbag
  1. If it is installed in the vehicle, follow the procedure for removing the driver's airbag, passenger airbag and side airbag.
  2. In all cases, short the airbag inflator wires by twisting the two wires together.
  3. Package the airbag in the same way as the new replacement part.
