Special Service Tools Required

Deployment Tool 0957A-34100A. Before disposing of any airbag or side airbag (including a vehicle being scrapped as a whole), the airbags or side airbags must be deployed. If the vehicle is still under warranty, the Technical Manager must give permission and/or special instructions before deploying the airbags or side airbags. Only airbags or side airbags that have already deployed (for example, as a result of a vehicle collision) may be scrapped. If the airbags or side airbags appear intact (not deployed), handle them with special care. Follow this procedure. Deploying Airbags in the Vehicle: If an SRS-equipped vehicle is to be scrapped completely, its airbags or side airbags must be deployed while still in the vehicle. Airbags or side airbags must not be treated as spare parts and must never be installed in another vehicle.

   Turn the ignition OFF, disconnect the negative battery cable, and wait at least 3 minutes.

   Make sure each airbag or side airbag is securely mounted.

   Make sure the special tool operates correctly by performing the check procedure.

   1. Driver airbag:
      • Remove the driver airbag and install the SST (0957A-3S100).
      • Install the driver airbag onto the steering wheel.
   2. Front passenger airbag:
      • Remove the glove box housing, then disconnect the connector between the front passenger airbag and the main SRS harness.
      • Install the SST (0957A-3S100).
   3. Side airbag:
      • Disconnect the 2P connector between the side airbag and the wiring harness.
      • Install the SST (0957A-3F100).
   4. Curtain airbag:
      • Disconnect the 2-pin connector between the curtain airbag and the wiring harness.
      • Install the SST (0957A-3S100).
   5. Knee airbag:
      • Disconnect the 2P connector between the knee airbag and the wiring harness.
      • Install the SST (0957A-3F100).
   6. Seat belt pretensioner:
      • Disconnect the 2P connector from the seat belt pretensioner.
      • Install the SST (0957A-3S100).
   7. Anchor pretensioner:
      • Disconnect the 2-pin connector from the anchor pretensioner.
      • Install the SST (0957A-3S100).

   Place the deployment tool at least 10 meters (30 ft) away from the airbag.

   Connect a 12-volt battery to the tool.

   Press the tool deployment switch. The airbag must deploy (deployment is clearly heard and seen: a loud noise and rapid inflation of the bag followed by slow deflation of air).

   Dispose of the airbag as a complete unit. No parts may be reused. Place it in a strong plastic bag and seal it securely.

   Make sure the special tool works correctly by performing the check procedure on this page.

   Place the airbag facing up and the EFD (Emergency Fastening Device) and Active Hood Actuator in a stack of no more than 5 tires, outdoors on a level surface at least thirty feet (10 meters) away from any obstacles or people.

    Connect a 12-volt battery to the tool.

    Press the tool deployment switch. The airbag must deploy (deployment is clearly heard and seen: a loud noise and rapid inflation of the bag followed by slow deflation of air).

    Dispose of the airbag as a complete unit. No parts may be reused. Place it in a strong plastic bag and seal it securely.

Deploying Airbags Outside the Vehicle: If an undamaged airbag has been removed from a scrapped vehicle, or defects or damage are found during transport, storage, or service, it must be deployed as follows:Disposal of a Damaged Airbag

   If installed in the vehicle, perform the removal procedure for the driver airbag, front passenger airbag and side airbag.

   In all cases, short the two wires of the airbag inflator together by twisting them.

   Package the airbag in the same way as the new replacement part.
